Just finished my first semester of school (Landscape Design, for those who are keeping track.) as a vaper (fifth overall), and boy oh boy. Was it ever a doozie.

First of all, it's a condensed semester (7 weeks as opposed to 15) and so we have the same workload and expectations, but half the time to do it in.

Second, our studio course mark was determined entirely by one ginormous project. Usually it's split between two or three smaller ones. Gah.

Third, this semester could have optionally been taken in Italy. ITALY! For. Two. Months. Now I, not having the luxury of being able to just pack up and leave the country, obviously couldn't take that option. Well, I suppose I could have, but I'd be coming home to a big pile of my stuff burning on the front lawn and the shiny blur of nine-iron whistling towards my head.

So all of my classmates who went are going to receive a silent treatment equivalent to one from a cat who has been left alone for two weeks. I will be glaring daggers (nay, ICBMs!) at them. I will refuse any and all overtures of friendliness and go sit facing a corner instead. I will do my best to hack up hairballs into their shoes and scratch up their couches.

Ahem.

So anyway, I've basically been a hermit for the last week or so getting everything polished and finalized for hand-in, and all I can say is that vaping has saved my sanity. (Mostly.) I'm so much more productive when I can sit at my desk at home and vape away without needing to go outside for a smoke every hour or so. When I need the computer labs at school, I can usually stealth vape if I'm off in a corner and it's late enough.

I'd occasionally step outside with a classmate or two anyway just to get my eyes of the darn screen, though. There's only so much AutoCAD and Sketchup and Photoshop one can take in a sitting. Also, I think I have a few more people interested in making the switch.

The only drawback is that when you can puff away with impunity, you puff away with impunity. I easily doubled my juice consumption over the last week or so. Some of that I chalk up to all of the sleep I wasn't getting, but still. It was a little alarming the first time I noticed I was refilling my DID twice a day.

Sometimes I wouldn't even notice getting overnic'd until I stood up to stretch my legs and found that they'd conspired with my inner ears to take a relaxed attitude towards the whole "balance" issue.

So, yeah, here I am. One semester, just fourteen weeks, away from graduating from a post-secondary institution. I made it through hell and sleep deprivation and making deadlines with about the same time to spare as the bomb squad member in the action movie blockbuster of your choice.

And I still don't smoke.

Have I mentioned how awesome vaping is lately?

Now I get to see whether or not PG and VG actually live up to their antimicrobial reputations. Both the ladies in my life (wife and daughter, before you get any ideas) have a nasty sore throat/cold/Martian Goat Flu/something. It'll be interesting to see how badly I get it.

At least the timing kind of worked out this time 'round.

Congrats, Mike! I hear you on the vaping-when-you-couldn't-smoke thing. Since I started vaping (and I'm allowed to do so at work) my stress levels went down because I'm not watching the clock for my next nic fix. Hell, I don't even have to go outside on my breaks if I don't want to; I'll just vape at my desk. Which is great during the winter. Plus being able to stealth vape in the mall or places like that if I feel like I need a puff but am not in a position to head outside for a moment. It's definitely been a sanity-saver -- however much remaining sanity I can lay claim to.

Mike Congrats and stick with it ...school and vaping

BTW when your finished the course maybe I could get you to cut my grass ?

Sure. I'll call my buddy the architect and he can replace your siding while we're at it. ;)

Actually, that's not entirely fair of me. A lot of people who graduate this program and open their own business end up doing maintenance at least some of the time. Depending on how my structures course goes next semester, I might start up a deck/fence/pergola/gazebo/whatever outfit.

I just realized I never responded to this. Thank you for the upvote concerning my writing. It's quite the hobby of mine, actually. There's an issue, though. It seems like no matter how hard I work my creative muscles, I've not yet been able to successfully bench-press the 300-pound barbell of writing a story worth reading, yet. Someday, though.

Thank you also for the kind words of encouragement. While I'm at it, thank you all. I'm glad I've finally found something I can stick with. Both as far as higher edumacation and not smoking anymore go. I'm sure my successes at each are fueling the other, and it feels good. I've got a longer future now and more I can potentially do with it.

Onwards and upwards, as they say.

Well, it's too late for this year, but maybe you should get involved in next year's NaNoWriMo -- unless you did this year already. Whether or not it's worth reading in your estimation though is sort of irrelevant to the main purpose of just getting you to write for writing's sake. :)

I did a couple of NaNos in years past. Think I managed almost 32,000 words in my best most prolific year. I'd love to give it another go. Perhaps next year once I don't have to spend all my productive time on school work.

Tangent: I think the perfect mascot for NaNoWriMo would be a molecular-scale rhinoceros. A Nano-Rhino, as it were.

...

Thank you! I'm here all week. Try the prime rib. It's delicious!

Congratulations Mike! Stick with it but Enjoy your Holiday Break.

I started college when I was 19... and graduated college when I was 56! (not the same course, of course) Lol

You have a very good grasp of the after-I-graduate life. Your training opens up possibilities, it doesn't tie you to strictly one choice. All these things are just steps along the way. Enjoy each step as it comes!

I dearly wish I had vaping as an option when I was on course. I started as a recently-quit and ended as a smoking (but sane) fiend. The nicotine certainly did help my concentration, I just wish I had been able to get it by vaping.

Our thoughts are with you.

YAY!! Congrats, Mike! I always enjoy your posts. Hope to meet you at a London vape-meet real soon! :D

Absolutely. I would dearly love to meet some locals and talk some shop. All of my smoker friends are politely curious, but tend to glaze over when I go into any kind of detail.

Edit - Fair warning for whatever upcoming local vape meets there may be: I tend to spend a fair amount of time taking it all in and getting a feel for the dynamic when first meeting new people, especially in a group setting, so don't be surprised if I seem more Gary Cooper-ish than I am in print.

Almost there, keep it on and you`ll be able to milk the rich and useless

Until I'm rich and useless myself! :) Well, maybe just upper-middle-class. Don't want to be too heartbroken come tax time.

Congratulations Mike! Stick with it but Enjoy your Holiday Break.

Thank'ee kindly. I've had two other attempts at post-secondary that sort of ground to a halt. One was computer programming, during which the tech bubble burst. Second was accounting, which I could do, but could not make myself care about one whit. I've used those skills I learned in school in completely unrelated fields, so I kind of had an idea, but I'm glad I have someone with actual post-post-secondary experience confirming that I'm not limited by my piece of paper. :)
