My gosh I pulled this bad boy apart today and popped the chimney off and the cotton was BLACK. All of it. from the coils down to the bottom of the juice deck. I hadn't changed it for a good two weeks, so why did it still vape perfectly?

Here's why. Steel mesh.

Rather than threading the cotton through the 2.0 ohm microcoil I built for it, I made a sleeve of #500 steel mesh, put that through the microcoil, then pulled the cotton through the steel mesh sleeve. Maintains a nice clean vape and hasn't leaked or given me a dry hit a single time. I've only seen a single youtube video of a build like this, and I think its a great idea for those having trouble with kayfun style attys.

I wrapped the 28 GA kanthal around a pretty big drill bit. Might have been 1/8th of an inch. I used very little steel mesh, just enough for a single layer in the sleeve. Its a little tough when you first build it because it likes to short, and you cant really pulse or dry burn it once you thread the cotton through the sleeve. Once you think you got it, you have to just hit the "I believe" button and hope you don't wiggle your mesh around too much while threading the cotton in.

The point is that the steel mesh seems to be the location where most of the juice is vaporized, rather than the cotton. Therefore the cotton is just feeding the steel mesh, and the vapor quality/production isn't so much affected as the cotton deteriorates, or turns black in my case.

Wonder if I could manage a dual coil with mesh/cotton... hmm
What do you guys think? any unique builds on Kayfun style attys?

Its not too bad. If your already proficient with genesis style atomizers, then you get used to dealing with shorts and pulsing. I personally have never had a build I've been truly satisfied with on a kayfun style atty except this one. All my other attempts either leaked or produced dry hits, or did both.

After its built and you've used it, there is so much carbon and such between the coils and the steel that the shorts don't really happen. They didn't when I changed my cotton today. Once you build it, all you have to do is swap the cotton.

And because of the black cotton, I noticed that the hit was a lot harsher, sort of like an increased throat hit. Which isn't all bad. Very much worth the work to me, and didn't really take much longer than a typical build on the Russian. Definitely helps to be a master of gennys though

The mesh business is a good one to get in to. Like I said before, most people don't really bother with it unless they are into genesis style atomizers. Before this build, My Pyrex RSST was my strict every day vape. And I have a Protank II, Unitank, Vivinova, Iclear 30 S,B, Standard, Iclear 16, Mini octopus RDA (squid) and probably a couple others I forgot about.

The way my RSST runs makes it a pig on juice and batteries, but it is a steam engine lol. The Russian with this build is a very clean flavor, and my 18490's last me an entire day again. Also the capacity is higher and its a satisfying vape. Also note that the vapor production is quite a bit higher with the Russians mesh build than others i've done

Interesting, I'll give it a shot on my next build. Would also be interested inhearing how you build your RSST as I just bought one, have only tried one build thus far, and wasn't overwhelmed. Wasn't a standard build, used RipTrippers vertical microcoil with tiny mesh wick wrapped with cotton at the tip. Went through one tank and didn't even bother refilling, just tore it down and cleaned it waiting for the next build.

Well for my RSST build...

I use 500 mesh, and a fair amount of it. Make it real tight in the wick hole but make sure its surgically hollow and very straight if you can. I wrapped a 11 wrap microcoil around a drill bit the same size as the wick hole and slid it over the wick. That way you don't have to wrap your coil around the wick itself and risk bending it and cutting off flow or something. It should be snug over the wick. Make sure that the wick isn't touching the bottom, because keeping the wick hollow allows the air to flow from the top, in to the tank. The hollow wick is not so the juice will flow up the wick.

The hard part is the pulsing. Your going to have to pulse like crazy to get out all the shorts. My build was with 28ga kanthal and typically comes out 2.4-2.5 ohms.

The only caveat of this build is that it takes a second to spool up and produce vapor, and takes a few draws to really start pumping out vapor. Like crazy vapor. I drilled my top cap out to 5/64" so the draw is pretty open. If you haven't drilled your top cap out, at least drill it to 1/16" because the stock RSST cap is a joke with its tiny intake hole.

Also, mine is the Pyrex RSST which is super nice. The advantage is that I can actually see the bubbles come out the bottom of the wick. If you have the original RSST, the tank is obviously glazed and you can't see into it. This build literally produces comparable vapor to a good dripper build, save the intense quad coil/clapton coil builds lol

I have yet to attempt my hand at genny style rda's simply due to my lack of knowledge in the area. Any suggestions on which of the ones out there I should try and what mesh I should grab up with it? I like the look of the RSST but will def have to get the pyrex, my only concern is that I keep my mod in my pocket when I am at work and need something a little more durable than glass and plastic. Russian's are a little pricy for me to drop on out of the gate, are there any good clones worth looking into?

Go for the standard RSST if your concerned about durability. The tank isn't your usual poly that you see in tanks like evods or the like, its more so of a flexible plastic I suppose. Haven't heard any major complaints about this material in the RSST.

That said, the glass in the Pyrex RSST is very thick. If your familiar with IBtanked carto tanks, its along the same lines of the glass thickness they used. I would be impressed if it were broken just riding in your pocket. Also, the Pyrex versions top cap sits much more snug than the original RSST. I had issues with the original RSST top cap getting off kilter because I leaned on it or something. Didn't lead to leaks or anything, just a little annoying.

I would go for the Pyrex RSST. RSST's have an insulated wick hole which presents less issues regarding shorts when using steel mesh. For the grade of mesh, I would go for 500 mesh, it's been the best for me, and vapes alot better than the 400 I was using before. Get a spool of 32 and 28 gauge kanthal and see what you like better. As explained in my previous post, I prefer to microcoil my RSST unlike most people. My prior builds were 3-5 wraps of 32 gauge with moderate success. My current one is 11 wraps of 28 gauge. I'm thinking of getting 26 gauge so I can do more wraps on my microcoils. RSST is a great beginner genny for sure
