We've cost the cigarette business roughly this much!

So, I'm bored, time to crunch some numbers.
We've got 3418 people to sign the petition (listed below), some of those are bound to be family members of vapers, but I'm sure plenty of vapers haven't signed too. We're going to assume, for the sake of this calculation, that the numbers balance to 3400.

So, 3400 vapers, average smoker (last I checked) smokes a pack a day. The price of cigarettes is rather variable depending on the state it is purchased in, ranging from about 2-3 dollars a pack (generics at an indian reservation) to around 9 dollars (last I knew) in New York. The middle ground is $6.50 a day, per vaper for a total of $20,800 a day, $7,592,000 a year. Not exactly a big chunk of their sales, but these are pretty conservative numbers. I'm almost certain that at least a majority of vapers were not aware of that petition. Not exactly scientific, but fun to think about!

The petition I picked for a base number of ecig users was this one:
A Petition for the AAP, ACS, AHA, American Legacy Foundation, ALA, AMA, ASH, FDA, Public Citizen and Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids to change their policy and support the sale and use of ecigarettes as a reduced harm option for committed adult smoker

thats it?
Only 3,400 e-cig users took the time to sign the petition?
what is wrong with that?

I have tried many times to sign it but both my e-mail addresses don't work. One is an AOL e-mail which I can see not working, but the other e-mail I have is with a website I have, that one I don't understand. Everything always seems to get through that one, even the nigerian prince who is deathly ill and is leaving his whole life savings to me.

I just tried again, we'll see, but so far today hasn't been my lucky day.

Keep in mind in your calculations how you define the cig business. As far as big tobacco, they're probably losing the number of cigarettes times the price the Indian reservations are charging, maybe a little less. Taking quite the hit is the government, anywhere from $1 to $8 a pack, which explains their reluctance to reign in the FDA on this matter.

Electronic disposables are already at your local convenience store. The tobacco companies are producing them (probably outsourced from China). I would bet that they are developing a replacement for the analog. They stand to profit or lose depending on whether they can capture dedicated smokers that switch. Eventually, analogs will continue to dwindle down.

Which brings up another point. Where is our rich (poor) uncle going to get the money from the tobacco settlement when people switch to the Ecig? Methinks that will pass on to electronic cigarette vapors. It will take a lawsuit and a settlement unless BT converts to electronics. Then, they have grounds to deny that the Ecig is a tobacco product. In any event, it wasn't included under the settlement.

The information I recieved while working in a smoke shop was that Cigarettes cost between 1.35 ans 1.95 per pack from the manufacturer, and MOST gas station type stores make around 10cents per pack. The rest is tax.

Makes the reservation price reasonable, and I know out cigarettes were "WAY overpriced", according to customers, and we only made 75cents a pack.

you realize we cost the government way, way, waaaaaay more than the tobacco companies... Cigs cost around $0.50 a pack to produce, market, etc ... even if they have a huge profit margin, its the government that is taxing them, which depending on where you live, is $2 - $6 a pack!!!

So now that the government is losing revenue, we have much, MUCH more to worry about :(
