What a difference a fresh carto makes! (and maybe steeping?) I had it all wrong!

I am new to vaping, and have been going through all the normal progressions. I started with a simple 510 SR atty + cart combo, then moved onto LR Boge cartos + tank (where I am at currently, and will probably never sway from).

Up until now I have always taste-tested new juices on a freshly cleaned SR 510 atty + cart. And so far I have gotten a lot of weird unattractive tastes which turned me off to the flavor, and ultimately thought all juices were absolutely disgusting. Well a few days ago I realized one of the biggest problems with my perception of juice flavor was because I was vaping them with an inadequate and tainted/contaminated setup!

Sure I cleaned the attys thoroughly and it seemed to work with no residual taste left behind from previous juices, but after re-trying a few of the flavors I originally hated on my atty, but on my Boge LR carto, I have entered a new realm of taste understanding and bliss!

A few weeks back I had ordered my first fruit flavored juices from Vermillion River, I got Texas Watermelon and Fruit Stripe Illusion. On my SR 510 atty the Texas watermelon tasted like watermelon flavored corn chips... yes I am dead serious... corn chips!! And the Fruit Strip Illusion tasted like mediciney cough syrup (bleh!). So after my initial taste of those flavors, I put them aside thinking I would never bother to try them again.

Well Just a few days ago I decided to take the plunge and possibly ruin a perfectly new Boge carto, but I was kind of desperate because my other juices just weren't cutting it and I needed something different. Taking the risk, I decided to re-try the Texas Watermelon. I filled up a brand new Boge LR carto full using the Taryn spin, and on first vape I was absolutely astonished at how amazing the flavor was! This was nothing like the corn-chip flavored watermelon I had tasted previously when used on my SR 510 atty, no, this was a rich and full tasting watermelon flavor with NO hints of corn chips at ALL! It was very pleasant, and in those few days I have completely sucked down the 4.5ml sample bottle I got and wished I had more.

Tonight, since I had polished off my Texas Watermelon, I decided, hey why not? Lets go ahead and stick the fruit strip illusion (that I originally hated) in the same carto! I did not clean it out, as I figure watermelon and fruit stripe illusion flavor should work seamlessly due to both being fruity flavors. I was still worried that the contamination of the watermelon might affect the taste, but I did it anyway. And WOW, the fruit strip illusion flavor blasted on my taste buds like I never expected! Unremarkable flavor and does not taste at ALL like cough medicine, but in fact just like the gum that I had as a kid!! Sweet, fruity and wonderful!

Now with all that said, I did let these flavors steep for almost 20 days, so that might be why they are so much better... but I am pretty sure it was because my SR 510 atty had been cleaned and re-cleaned so many times that it was simply far too contaminated with other flavors to give a true representation of the real flavor of the juice (or it was just under-performing). Not only that, but I have found the performance of a SR atty and LR carto monumentally different in taste of a juice. These LR Boge cartos really bring out the flavor in every juice I have tried, especially the sweet ones!

So was it steeping, or a combination of steeping and using higher quality equipment? I dunno, but what I do know is that I am far less dissatisfied with juices now that I have my LR Boges around, and now I feel much more confident that when I buy a high quality flavor from a USA vendor, I know that it will be true to its claims!

I gotta say, I am so happy right now! For the first time I actually feel vaping is so much better (and more fun) than analogs, as now I can actually vape flavors that taste good! I just wish cartos were even cheaper, cause taste testing juices with a new carto is a huge risk, as there is really no way to fully clean one out to make it as good as it is brand new.

So this makes me wonder, are peoples taste really so subjective, or it is because they are vaping with equipment that biases the taste? I think the only way people can truly have an unbiased remark about a juice is if they use it on fresh equipment, otherwise the potential for taste contamination is much higher than we may realize, despite all of our super fancy cleaning methods.

Food for thought.

Yes...good points a fresh carto and the appropriate equipment can make a difference. As an example I find that my variable volt device allows me to appreciate e-liquid better. I dial it up or down to meet my flavor needs! I have a juice that I'm steeping and I hope it works as I have 50 ml of it! I found that Boge cartos a tank system and VV device has mad vaping a great experience for me. Now I'm going to experiment with steeping and then I should be good to go!;)

I have found that the taste differs with resistance. For example, a 1.5 ohm single coil carto gets too hot in one small area and the taste is like tar. A DC carto at 1.5 ohm has more area and less heat per coil so the taste is better but still too hot for me.
A 2 ohm DC carto is perfect for best taste. Even the 2.5 ohm DC carto is good for flavor.
So going lower in resistance is not doing it for me.

All my Boge LR cartos measure at ~2.5ohms (so likely around 2.3-2.4ohm with DMM inaccuracies counted for). So far I have yet to vape with a true 2.0ohm or less. So even those these claim to be LR, they are more like a half-breed LR/SR. But they work for me.

Oh and a update to my little 'experiment'. At first while vaping the fruit stripe illusion it was amazing, perfectly fruity and sweet, it was a thing of beauty. But before I could even top-off with my typical 10-15 drop refill, the taste started to become more and more overly sweet and burnt tasting. And despite refilling (aside from the first 1-2 decent tasting hits) the taste just kept getting more and more burnt/sweet tasting, it got to the point where it tasted like I was vaping burning artificial sugar, and it was quite disgusting. It got so bad that I am now considering chucking the carto because even after a quick vodka cleaning, the fruit stripe illusion flavor is still overly sweet and has a weird burnt/caramelized taste to it. One of the worst tasting things I have endured yet in my vaping experiences. The smell has permeated my entire apartment and it is all I can smell now, and even has soaked into my hands and fingers.

I have no idea what happened, its possible the first round of vaping with the new flavor combined with the watermelon, made it good, but once the watermelon flavor went away I was left with a horrendous tasting overly sweet and burnt monster that almost makes me sick thinking about.

I'm thinking that when it comes to cartos, mixing flavors (no matter how similar they are) is NOT good idea, as they must combine into some kind of strange funk after a certain period. Either that or my carto was on the edge of death after the 4.5ml of Texas watermelon, and when I refilled with the fruit stripe it just decided to die. But I have gotten way more than 4.5ml of the same flavor though my other Boge cartos before, so it must be because I mixed flavors and it could have had a strange chemical interaction. Cause I also noticed the fluid coming out of the carto after refilling was much darker than the fluid that I put into it, almost like it was being caramelized.

Man this sucks, being limited to a single flavor with a single carto is extremely annoying and limiting, as I don't have the funds to keep buying new cartos after each sample dangit! These stupid things are supposed to be good for 6-8ml at least, this is ridiculous!

Yes IT, I'm in the same boat as you. Tastes good for a day or two then a burned tar taste. Change to a higher ohm atty (less hot) and no taste and no more TH.
Tried many different attys and cartos of between 1.5 and 3 ohm with different ejuice flavors and strengths. Same thing. Either a burned flavor or no flavor.
It must be the taste buds that get used to the flavor especially if you chain vape.
