What kind of feedback have some of you gotten from your doctors when you tell them you have quit smoking with the use of an e-cig? Do you mainly get positive feedback because you have quit analogs or do you get a lecture about vaping and how you need to quit that too? I have an appointment for a checkup later this month and am curious what I might expect from my doctor. I'm hoping for some support from mine since I've tried the "Chantix route" twice now and failed. This is actually working! I haven't smoked in a month now and am pretty darn proud of myself

My doctor was happy I quit smoking cigarettes but was not thrilled about the vaping. Suggested I stop vaping as soon as I can. The nurse gave me a little lecture on how bad ecigs are.

What did the nurse have to say about ecigs? Just curious since almost everything I have read in medical studies has been inconclusive or minimal data to base a decision on.

yeah most of it is hog wash at this point... anyone who says that e-cigs are safe or hazardous to your heath knows nothing about whats really going on... it will be years before we have collected hard data on the matter. people want to throw lab studies and theory's in your face are just kidding them selves, and don't want to face the fact that we have no idea what these things will do in the long term to the human body. no amount of bench testing makes up for real world application... However if i was a gambling man (and i am) i would bet that e-cigs are far better than analogs for you.

My doc wrinkled his nose when I told him I had been thinking of replacing regular smoking with ecigs. Not because he thinks ecigs are bad, but because...

1. He has no idea if they are good, bad, or benign in any way. Just because VG and PG are supposedly harmless to ingest into your digestive system, it does not mean that VG and PG are safe to inhale. And I agree. There is no data and the fact aht PG and VG could be harmful to your lungs (heck, maybe even more than real smoke) is a good possibility.

2. While replacing the phisical addiction/habit of smoking analogs may be a good thing in the short term, ultimately the physical habit is a very bad thing in may ways and eventually needs to be dealt with and eradicated as well.

I totally agree with him 110%. But I am trying my best to move to ecigs for the time being because my physical addiction to smoking is so strong and I would rather not deal with it right now. But I am having such a hard time moving to ecigs because, IMHO, it is nothing like smoking a cigarette. If anything, it is more like smoking a pipe, and that does nothing to satisfy my physical addiction cravings for an analog cig.

My doctor was happy for me. She asks how it's going when I visit & if I've had any cigs or any craving for one. She shared with me that ecigs helped a family member of hers so her position & opinion is a little different since she's seen the benefits first hand. Of course she wants me to quit all together but she doesn't hassle me about it either. She just smiles and says keep up the great work. I'll also add that she's younger so I think she's not as grumpy & uptight as some other doctors might be.

I am fortunate to have multiple doctors that are all very collaborative and if they don't know about something, they don't have a knee-jerk reaction against it.

All of them see vaping as "risk reduction" as the number of chemicals being inhaled are lower and are GRAS (generally recognized as safe).

It's a sad truth that many in the medical profession (just like many lay-people) have the deep-seated association and assumption that "nicotine=tobacco=cancer risk", and I can "sort of" understand that, especially since tobacco has long been the main method of consuming nicotine. Fortunately for me, my docs aren't as reflexive and are willing to agree that it appears to be a less harmful and lower risk factor for disease or health issues.

Of course, they would all prefer that I ate right, exercised more, breathed fresh air, and floss. But they're realists.

What's your setup? After I tried vaping it made my marlboro smooths taste/feel like virginia slims. I get much more of a TH and sensation in general with Vaping.

My doctor (Not that I see any doctors since 1974. our family doctor at that) Approved vaping. He said they are on nearly 20 years and I never heard a case against it. If it keeps you away from cigarettes go agead he said. anything is better than smoking.

Yes we are on something we dont know the results but I am sure on my behalf that I feel better so by going on with cigarettes would most probably be disastrous so while I feel good with e-cigs I will go ahead like doc said.

PG is in prescription asthma inhalers.. So IMO that means it is safe to inhale into your lungs.
My Dr has a "no comment" policy. Which is why I am looking for another Dr.

When I showed my doctor my e cig set up he said great! A lot of his patients are reporting good success with them.
A co worker friend of mine goes to a cardiologist for his heart condition and he mentions his e cig use and the doctor pulls out his Por Vari and says like this? They spent a half hour talking vv devices!

At the risk of turning on the debate about what studies say, The studies that HAVE been done all indicate that e cig use is FAR better than smoking. Also consider e cig use has been around now for like ten years with NO negative effects reported. Also I can attest that since I started e cig's I can breath better, I can go up a flight of stairs without hacking and overall health has improved. I guess that says to me, They are safe.

Glad I saw this thread. I had some issues tackling a thyroid issue with my Primary Doc (ordering the wrong blood panels and on and on) amongst other annoyances- so I decided after years to switch primary docs. I saw my new one for the first time today. At my old docs office my NP actually recommended ecigs VERY strongly and provided me with some of the resources that led me here, the doc was OK with it and my NP fully supported it.

I was a bit apprehensive as to how that part of the visit would go. My new doc is rather young, she is probably about my age and she wasnt super knowledgable about ecigs- but she fully supported it. I was pretty happy. Her opinion was definitely cautious towards the unknowns - but she said she had seen a large amount of success and felt they were certainly less dangerous than some of the pharma options. Overall not to shabby.
