What am I missing?

I was thinking about adapting a cartomizer to my protege, namely the KR808D-1 cart. If KR808D-1's and 901's are fully compatible, and the protege has a 901 adapter - whats to stop one from putting the cartomizer on the 901 adapter? Maybe I'm missing something. Is it a male/female thread issue? I never had a 901.
