Would I benefit any way with a 20 or 30 amp battery? I rarely build a coil less than .6 - .7 ohms. Most are at least 1.2 or higher so I can use them on my VV/VW mods. I know not to use the higher amp bats on these mods but I do have a mech I like to vape with and was wondering if the hit would be better with higher amps. One of the guys at my local B&M went through the math which I already understood and said I would not benefit at all but from what I have read I am now unsure.

first I have to ask where did you here this? Always use high drain batteries in a regulated mod.

anyways no, no benefit at all except more breathing room if say for some reason a coil decided to drop down to .4 ohms. other then that, if the coil doesnt need it then the battery will not use it.

Thanks Thrasher. I just meant mathematically there would be no reason to use 20 or 30 amps in a regulated mod because of the safety features built in (being regulated)
correct. it would be more headroom and the battery may run cooler if you chain vape like a madman but no most are built to run just fine with the 10 amp limit on most batteries.

The only reason to use the 20+ amp batteries would be for the extreme sub ohm crowd who are making coils < 0.6 ohms. At that point they need a battery that can pull more than the 10 amps that most IMR/Hybrids do.

AW IMR
18650 2000mah 10Amp CDR
18650 1600mah 24A

Samsung hybrid (LiNiCoMnP)
INR18650-20R 2000mah 22A

MNKE IMR
IMR18650 1500mah 20A

Panasonic or Orbtronic hybrid
CGR18650CH (IMR/Li Ion hybrid) 2250mAh 10A
NCR18650PD (LiNiCoAl) 2900mAh 10A

Efest IMR
18650 2000mah 10A
18650 1600mAh 30A

Sony hybrid
us18650vct3 1600mAh 30A
us18650v3 IMR 2250mAh 10A

Not all that long ago, Microsoft came darn close to putting Word and Excel on every computing device in every home and every business. Now we're farther away than ever. Smartphones, despite their name, can barely keep up with my email. Literacy seems doomed.

Since you have to ask, it would be a great exercise to measure the internal resistance of your battery. If you don't already have a meter, a $10 Radio Shack meter will do. Measure your winding resistance, the resting voltage of your battery, and the button-down voltage sag. Apply Ohm's Law and calculate the battery's internal resistance. My AW IMR 18350 on a Zen 2, with its gold plated contacts, measures 136 milliohms.

That's a large part of your answer, BTW. High draw batteries have lower internal resistance.

A follow up question, then. Is the coil resistance needed to draw 30A from a 3.7V battery higher or lower than my battery's 0.136 ohms?

Check this out for getting an estimate of the amps you'll be pulling:

I guess I can't post links. Nevermind.

Did your link include the mod and cell resistance that Mike pointed out?
How many sub ohm vapers get to vaper more than 50 to 60% of their battery capacity with the rest being wasted?
How many with say 0.2 ohm coils have a total loop resistance 0.3 ohms or less?
That's the 0.2 ohms for the coil and 0.1 ohm for everything else for 1/3 of the cell energy heating the hand.
