What do you think of PWM?

Hi. I've been vaping for 2 months. Been reading the ECF for a while. First I want to say there are wonderful, patient people here. Starting to vape is like being abducted by aliens in the middle of the night and dropped on a distant planet. The equipment is different from anything I've seen and it has its own language. Thank you all who give helpful information. The new visitors on this strange planet appreciate your help.

So back to the subject I use a Vision Spinner and some Kanger T3D tanks. I see reviews of tanks and mods. PBusardo has excellent reviews and I really like the measurements he shows on the scope. People on ECF post pictures of measurements too. There is DC mode and PWM mode that I am learning about. Have you used both modes? What do you think? As far as I can tell the Vision Spinner (not the Spinner 2) is plain DC. So far this works ok for me. Most of the time I use 3.8v with the 1.5 ohm coil. (2 months ago I wouldn't know what this all the meant )

Thinking of getting better tanks and better batteries so I'm wondering if PWM is good or bad. Will it hurt the vape or help the vape? It has been said it helps battery life. What does it do to the vape? Flavor rather than vape volume is what I'm wondering about.

Hello cigmist and welcome to the forum. I didn't have a clue what PWM was... so.. as I do quite often, I used the search box at the top of every page and typed PWM in it. You might find the answer in that manner. Good luck.

I steer clear of PWM mostly because the older vv mods like the Vamo used to use them producing a "rattlesnake" effect and, generally, a poor vape in comparison to higher end or unregulated mechanical equipment. It's pretty easy to find a vv device that offers a flat DC signal these days.

Yea pwm kinda sucks. Straight dc is better and devices that "ramp up" are even better because they gives the coil extra power from a cold start.

Some of my mods are PWM. I'm not throwing them out any time soon. By choice, I'd now avoid it.
t.b.h. I've not given it much thought. Only 1 of my mods ever had noticeable rattlesnake.

Using PWM to get to a specific voltage/wattage can be harsh. Of course then there's PWM and PWM... To one extreme a Provari 2.5 uses it - but at 800 Hz. To the other, a cheap - but pretty - Tesla is doing it at only 33 Hz. The most basic issue then is how many times per second is the device pulsing to get you to that specific voltage/wattage? And because the signal is being pusled - some times it's higher than voltage X in certain applications - a lot of the time it's lower - to get to a mean voltage. Pulsing at only 33 times per second is a very rough and noticeable experience for most of us. Great for motor control, can be an issue when it comes to vaping.

I am usually the oddball, and so it is once again. I have only used it on my vv gripper, but I love that lil thing. I don't get burnt hits, or a rattlesnake, but as rick said, I'm sure it depends on the mod it's being used in. You probably saw busardo talking about rms and mean, and honestly I don't know which one mine uses. It's probably not used a whole lot for good reason, but for me it probably wouldn't be a deal breaker.

Welcome! I never had any issue with pwm. I had one of those 33Hz 15w chips for 6mos or so and loved it. I guess I'm just not that picky

stare intently at your monitor.... do you see it flickering? well it is... somewhere between 55 and 75 times a second... PWM mods "flicker" at 33 - 800 times a second... what do you think is more sensitive... your eyes or tounge??

you to ecf cigmist. You can see why it is a great place to be. Don't ever be afraid to ask anything here because we were all new once and remember how nice we were treated here. Now I've got to stop wondering what that Hyena sounds like.

From 33hz to 800hz is quite a range so I see there is a difference in the PWM frequencies, they sure aren't the same.

Seems like the PWM is like the old steam locomotive. 33hz would be like the steam chugging out the smoke stack at a slow speed. The 800hz would be like the steam streaming out of the whistle. Seems like most don't like the PWM but then a few find it ok. Guess the thing to do is bring my little T3D tank to a store and try a 33hz battery mod and a 800hz battery mod to see how it works for me.

Or just go with the DC-DC that are all over the market now
