What does it really mean to say an e-cig is a KR808d-1, 501, 901, etc.?

First, I apologize if this information exists elsewhere. I assume it does, but I was not coming up with the correct search criteria to find it.

Throughout this site I often see e-cigs discussed not by brand name but something more generic such as the KR808d-1, the 510, 901, etc. But I am not sure what we are really defining with these terms.

To take just the KR808d-1 as an example. I find sites selling them as simply KR808d-1's yet I also find them being sold under brand names such as Vapor King or SmokeTip. So, what does it take to be called a KR808d-1? Are all KR808d-1 e-cigs really exactly the same? Are they all from some single manufacturer or is there more than one place that produces KR808d-1's? If they are not all the same, what sort of things would differentiate one KR808d-1 from another (excluding things like a given vendors price, customer service, etc.)

This may seem like a silly question, but I am just having a hard time wrapping my brain around exactly what these model numbers (if "model" is even the correct word to use in this context) really mean.

Thanks in advance for any responses.

The numbers refer to the threading on the battery. It's handy to know that if your battery is, say, a 510, that all 510 atomizers and all 510 cartomizers will fit. They all have their little quirks, too....and people like/dislike one kind because it gives a warmer vapor, or a cooler vapor, or whatever, but it's battery threading that gives it it's number.

Note that some types are somewhat interchangeable (901 atties will work on a kr8 battery, but kr8 cartos will not work on a 901 battery without an adapter), and even within a specific type not everything is compatible (some kr8 cartos do not play well with some kr8 batteries -- some have a groove on the battery and a flat end on the carto, some have a groove on the carto and a flat end on the battery. flat-to-flat will not work (no airflow) and groove-to-groove may not provide a solid battery connection). And of course there are always adapters between different types.

The threading is the main difference. If a product is a 510 battery or compatible, then all 510 atomizers and cartomizers *should* work on it. Some companies re-brand a model as you noted. Another example is V4Ls which are KR808D-1 threaded. Sometimes, when they re-brand a model it is with their own special "tweaks" to the model. Sometimes, not.

But do note that there are adapters available to use one type of battery with almost all of the major types of atomizers/cartomizers. Such as 510 to 901 (which is compatible with KR808D-1), or 510 to 801, and so on. Usually on adapters, the battery model is listed first, and then the atomizer/cartomizer threading.

In general, the 510, KR808D-1 and 801 (pen style) are some of the more popular, but there are new models coming out all of the time, such as the Leo, which is not compatible with anything - yet- except the Leo.

Almost every cigarette shape e-cigarette is designed and made in China by a handful of companies. We generally buy those e-cigs as their original model number or name or we at least know what model it is we are buying. The popular ones are all sold by reasonably priced multi-brand ecig hardware vendors. But there is a seedy upper crust of ecig sellers with professional looking sites with "testimonials" and other BS and all they are doing is rebranding mostly models with their own "name" and acting like they invented it. In addition many jack up the prices, charging $40, $50 or in one case $119 for a battery that should cost $12-20. Sometimes they charge twice as much for prefilled carts and don't even want customers to know they can be refilled. They don't sell blank carts. Sometimes they carts that are purposely harder to refill (like cartomizers with glued-on hard caps so the average person thinks they cannot be refilled). They also lie about how long a cart or cartomizer lasts etc. Many favor models that are not popular or buyable except from Chinese wholesalers. And some of the models aren't even good ecigs - some are superminis that satisfy few people more than a few weeks. The worst of them hook people into free trial plans then charge them hundreds or even thousands - one guy had to get a lawyer.

Some rebranders are reputable, sell blank carts, sell juices, charge reasonable prices. Vapor4Life and Bloogplanet are two - they sell a KR808D-1 model. If you buy their ecig you can use standard KR808D-1 cartomizers and accessories from elsewhere.

KR808D-1 - that is a whole model number and same basic ecig and Vapor4Life sells
510 - that is Joye 510 though there are also clones around
901 - that is a DSE901
Ego and Riva - they have name and are fat-battery versions of 510 (or in Riva's case 510 model or 901 model)
Ego-T is the new juice tank version of the Ego

This was very helpful. I am starting to learn my way around these things but had no idea that the threading was what made the difference in the naming. I get the resistance and and the difference between cartomizers and cartridges with seperate atomizers.

How many atty's would you think a person should keep on hand (everday use and emergency oh crap moments total).

Will direct sunlight or heat (Florida summer in the car heat) cause juice to go bad?

It is a good idea to store your ejuice in a cool, dry place. Especially ones that are steeping....I only keep out what flavors I am currently using.

And direct sunlight will diminish the nic in a very short time.....don't chance it.

Ok we have established that it is related to the threading. You know a 510 atomizer will fit a 510 battery.

But what do the numbers 510, 901 actually mean, why did they choose those numbers, is it a measurement related to the threads, if so what it is measuring?

If it's not a measurement, but a model number, does the number mean anything, or did they just use a random number generator?

This is all helpful but wondering what adapter I would use on my 801 to make it compatible with my 501 carts? The adapter I have found that says 801 to 501 will only use the 501 carts that has a male end. Many of my carts are female end but can't seem to find an adapter for those? I was wondering if the adapter that went from 801 to 901 might fit my female carts? Any answers out there? I sure would appreciate the help.

The 510 are Joyetech most popular pv, while 901 are from DSE (other manufacturer), and they are model number. I don't know why they use that number, you should ask the origin manufacturer about that. :D
I'm guessing that the code are taken from the prototype, for example:
If you browse through a Chinese E-Cig Manufacturer website, the most common naming was Model-1, Model-2, and so on. When they are designing the product, they made various overall design (shape & size), while the atomizer/cartomizer are designed based on the model. So there will be Model-1 type 01, Model-1 type 02, Model-2 type 01, and so on. I'm guessing that 510 is the fifth model, and the tenth design of something (maybe the atomizer). Well, i'm just wild guessing here, out of boredom. :D

I would agree with the OP that this kind of info on different types of threading is confusing to people even to others who have been vaping for weeks, or even months now. In my case I've just settled with 510 threading which is the most common as I came to find out. I didn't wanna confuse myself any further. I've own kits that are not compatible with 510 like the 901 and 801 as well as the minis and disposables. 901 probably has equivalent code or number in other vendors. I got BE112 which is a penstyle and later learned that it's the 801 type. So how do we expect first timers to recognize all these confusing numbers?

I used to search for a table or a diagram that lists all of these existing numbers/codes out there that shows which are compatible to such and such and so on. There is none until now. When you get your first kit, that's when you start searching for which type could be added to it... the choices seem endless.

;-)

OK.... please bear with me on this. I have 2 kinds of 510 carts......some female that need the battery to be male and some male which needs the battery to be female..... but both are 510 carts. I have a couple 801 batteries which I love because they last longer and seem more powerful. I found an adapter to use my male 510 carts but so far haven't found an adapter to fit the female 510 carts. That is what I am trying to accomplish here. :) Any more "wisdom"?
