What does this "C" mean

OK, I am an old school tech. I have been studying batteries looking for a mod power source. I noticed that most high performance LiPoly batteries have a rating that I don't understand, C. As in "
15C 11.1V 900mAh

So what does the C stand for? I believe it is a new way to rate current but I am not sure. Enlighten my old mind please.

Means it's one hell of a tough battery!!!

"C" signifies rate of discharge. 1C is equivalent to draining or charging the battery in 1 hour. For a 900mah battery, a 1C discharge would be a draw of .9A. A 2C discharge would be 1.8A. A 15C rating means that battery can withstand a discharge of 13.5 AMPS (15 * .9) without damage.

Now you see why people make multi-battery mods - whenever possible, you want to keep the mAh as high as possible so that the battery isn't damaged by the current draw we place upon it (usually between 1.5 and 2.5 amps). Ideally, you want the discharge from the atomizer to be LESS than 1C, for best performance and longevity.

So - you're vaping an 801 that pulls 1.5A? You want a battery pack of at least 1500mAh capacity. Going big with a 510 at 2.5A? <Capt. Quint> I think we need a bigger boat battery! </Capt. Quint>

Never thought you'd have to go 'back to school' just to mod an e-cig, huh? ;)

Yuppers - it's not to say it won't work, because it will - after all, the 'normal' batteries are anywhere from about 150 to 250 mAh. It's just better to have the discharge be less than 1C.

So the high performance LiPoly batteries they use for RC models with a C of 15 to 20 would not be good for vaping?

They'd be great for vaping, in the respect of stability - they are specifically designed for high-drain situations, with that high of a C rating.

What I was talking about in the post above are the 'normal' e-cig batts. With mAh ratings from 150 - 250 mAh, we're obviously hitting them a lot harder than 1C. So, it's not to say that anything over 1C is going to instantly kill the batteries, just that it does incremental damage over time.

I didn't have any knowledge of what the C ratings meant either ...thanks for an easy to understand explanation.:)

I'm glad I was able to explain it where it made sense to you - reading the different battery sites, it took a while before it really "clicked" for me.

Just remember to keep amperage draw <= battery pack mAh and you'll have happy, longer-lasting batteries!!
I'm glad it clicked for you, our exchange in a previous thread was not in vain :p

I never disagreed that it wasn't important, just your insistence that batteries HAD to be a certain rating to work and the implication that a battery couldn't supply more amperage than it's C rating. :)

The C stands for Catapult. Ya know like to kill slow moving ppl. and the 11.1V 900mAh is actually a date....or coordinate.... whichever you prefer......Id prefer a date because of the loneliness.....damn catapult.

Ha ha ha, that's a good one.

I guess the C is used in the high performance RC racing area where it make a difference. It's not important for our application.

Don't think LiPo batteries would be ideal. They are much more finicky about being over-discharged and can have some mighty impressive meltdowns while charging. Most responsible RC people will charge theirs inside a special enclosure or outside away from a building in case of an accident.

I have been concerned about the unstable elements of the LiPo batteries. I'm planning on using my 510 PCC to build a mod and plan on using the matching charger board. I may not since I ran into construction design problems.

I have looked at the RC sites and had noticed the special charging bags they recommend using while charging the LiPo batteries. Maybe that's why the PCC is built in a metal box.
