So I just finished my first box mod, built it for dual 18650 in parallel. was getting ready to pop my married VTC4's in it when I noticed this spot. Ive had juice flood into one of my old mods and I know some of it got under the wrap on the battery, but now this spot is kinda worrying me... Ive never run these batteries hard, never had them heat up on me. Normally they are in my sigelei 100+, but I figured I would use them in my new box.

Any way, on to the pic...

That kind of looks like oxidation/rust on the can, but without removing the wrapper and inspecting it, I couldn't say for sure.

I would ditch the battery for fear that the structure of the can were somehow compromised. Even a microscopically small hole would allow the electrolyte to leak out, which would cause the battery to degrade.

Could you quantify that a bit please??

One person definition of "running batteries hard" differs from another.

then adding in the 6 months adds another dimension to the equation.

for example: running 1 amp, the battery will probably last years, but running 10 amps, maybe it's only going to last months.

We just had a big discussion of this phenomena. Do a search on VTC`s and you should find it easily. My opin is that due to heat, the casing wrapper comes away from the battery slightly and this causes this discoloration, and its no big deal. I gots lots of them like that, in fact all of mine have some manor of this on them, does`nt cause any problems whatsoever.

well, I just got a new pair of 25R's so Ill use those. Later Im going to pull the wrappers off the Vtc4's and see whats going on under them. In the mean time, Im playing it safe until I know they are safe.

Good idea :thumb:. I've never seen that dark spot under a wrapper and I would worry about it. Let us know what you find when you take off the wrapper please.

Both of my vtc4s have done that I believe it's from sweating it only does it after I push them a little with super sub ohm builds. I've rewrapped them twice. When you pull the wrap off as long as it's clean and rust free your good. The heat from the battery causes some condensation I think, either that or your vaping in the shower

Are you talking about the dark spot? I've never seen that before.

It's not the shower. Been there, done that

I never vape in the shower... :) Pulled the wrapper off last night. actually looked like some of my Juice was molding, but I know that isn't the case. I wiped the battery with a rag and all the marks came right off. Still not sure I wanna keep using them, but I have them re-wrapped. I may use them singly in my Sigelei mini. they wont run hard in there at all.

It's not looking promising, but you should definately strip the wrapper for a closer inspection. Remember ~ batteries are cheap, pain hurts, medical bills are expensive.

Thanks for letting us know that. As long as there is no pitting on the battery casing I would consider that battery completely good now. The worry I had was that the casing was compromised.

well sadly, Im still concerned about it though... I cant really tell if there are any uber or microscopic voids in the casing. Im not using that battery any more. Dont want no esplosin. And is it really worth it to use it and have a problem when a new battery is less than 10 bucks? Nah. ill pay for certain peace of mind.

It's a judgment call and you need to do what you think is best :thumb:
