What got you into the wonderful world of vaping?

I'm a newcomer to the vaping community, but if there's one thing I know, is that everyone is so nice. Rarely do you come across a lifestyle/hobby where people are so open, relaxed, and nice about things. Makes me proud to be a part of such a wonderful community of people! So I started thinking about how I came into vaping, and I'd like to find out how you all did too!

I've never been much of a smoker. My father was. He was a very heavy smoker and thankfully he's kicked the habit completely. So cigarettes were always present in my household for my entire life, it was something normal. So when I turned 18, naturally I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I started out just sneaking a cigarette from my old man every couple of months. I found out pretty much after my first puff that I completely hated the smell, the taste, an the burn. I couldn't inhale any of the smoke without coughing up a lung, so it quickly became of matter of standing there in the mirror looking at all the cool smoke around me. Eventually I was brave enough to buy a pack of Marlboro Nxt. The menthol made it a bit easier on me to play around with the smoke. Always took me months to finish a pack and I think I only ever really bought 3 packs sense then. So one day, I heard something on TV about "e-cigarettes" and my eventual research led me to the Blu E-Cigs. The fact that I could have my pretty smoke to do tricks with and have actual flavors attached to it blew my mind. I bought the starter pack from my local Walgreens and I loved it them! ...for about a month until the charger pack gave out on me. Blu was nice enough to replace it with a pack that worked for another month before it gave out too. So at this point, I started looking into Mods, the next step up from the 'cigalikes". I spent countless nights up late researching what was what, deciphering nicknames and slang terms for certain things, and spent a long, long time generally confused as to what vapes and mods actually were. I think the whole vaping scene is still new enough that not a lot of it is standardized. Doesn't help a new comer out when there are a ton of different names for the same thing. This forum actually helped me out a great deal! Any time I Googled something, lo and behold, the top hit was a question posed on this very forum. So I actually ended up getting a Vamo V5 mod and I'm thoroughly happy with what I got. I've only hit the tip of the iceberg and I am looking forward to exploring what else is out there! I know a lot of you are ex smokers that used Vaping to essentially save your life. I'd love to hear your stories! :D

Our situation is similar, friend. I grew up with every member in my family smoking. My mother, father, grandma, and grandfather had smoked since their early teens. As a kid, I was teased constantly due to smelling like smoke. I couldn't stand the smell of my own house. I would hate being in the car with either family member, due to their constant smoking. Fast forward to high school, and you'd see me, a little jackass, loitering at the local burger joint with a group of friends. I believe I was a sophomore; and the majority of the people I hung out with where seniors. Needless to say, when I was asked "Do you smoke?" I wanted to seem hip, cool, whatever. A buddy handed me a marlboro and I hacked my lungs out, to a nice audience of laughter. Little did I know, that would set a chain of events into motion. It started with me stealing cigarettes from my mother, often 1-2, which could last me up to a week. I'd sneak outside, and because she smoked so heavily, I'd smoke them in her car. She wouldn't notice, right?

Til the day I started stealing more and more. Til the day I lit a cigarette in front of her, and she promptly slapped the **** out of me. Unfortunately that couldn't deter me, and I worked my way up to a pack a day at the age of 16. I continued this trend til 20, where I was up to nearly 2 packs a day. I smoked like a chimney. I smoked as if it was going out of style. Nothing could stop me. My grandfather died of cancer, surely related to cigarette smoking. That didn't do it. Damaged lungs, trouble breathing, frequent trips to the hospital didn't do it.

But you know what did? My girlfriend. I'm 23 now, and this febuary, she finally got so sick and tired of me lighting a cigarette what seemed to be every 20 minutes. She had hassled me previously about switching, and I'd give her crap. I thought they were just a trendy fad, having tried the "e hookah" pens. Terrible. Well, she surprised me with an evod set on valentines day.

Let me tell you something. Every two weeks, I'd buy a carton of cigarettes, which if I stretched well, could last me til my next paycheck. The morning I bought my carton, I received my evod set. I decided to give it a try. THREE days later, that carton was gone. If a friend needed a pack of smokes, he got two. Room mate needed some? Take as many as you want. I smoked about 6 cigarettes out of the entire carton, up until I received that package.

I've went on to amass a huge collection, start an online blog, reach out to vendors both online and locally, and do my share of promotion. I love this. It saved me. Heart disease, stroke, and cancer run rampant in my bloodline. I see my family struggle with issues, and I can only believe smoking amplifies them tenfold. I truly believe I am saving my health, prolonging my life, and making myself the best person I can be.

And well... I ENJOY IT !

Good luck on making the switch and welcome to ECF!

What got me into vaping was... Long story short, I wanted to quit smoking.

Regarding the nice people on this forum, that's true (in most cases). I frequently visit another forum for a hobby I picked up 1.5 years ago. The people there are also nice and helpful. The hobby is R/C Helicopter, and the forum is HeliFreak.com. However, as in real life, exceptions are the rule. You run into an a.... here and there.
