they'll probably be a thing...but I think they underestimated the demand for cells. Seems folks are already having to go to fasttech for the batteries. When the batteries are readily available, I'd bet the mods will be too. That being said, I've heard of a few modders gearing up for them...small shop kinda folks.

I thought it would catch on quickly as a 20700 is almost the same size as an 18650 but obviously more capacity.

I don't really care if they catch on as I have a dozen 18650 Provaris and over 30 18650 mech mods. I am slightly concerned with 18650 availability a few years down the road if 20700 becomes the new standard.

With all the $ invested in 18650 batteries by most vapers, I don't think they'll be a major thing for quite a while. (didn't 18650 mods start out in a niche type of deal as well? and 26650s?)
I avoided 26650's like the plague. Now, since the VapeDroid C1D2 came out, they're about all I use. that's the best mod for the money I've seen yet.

There will always be 18650's. Computers, power tools..... there's a million more uses for the 18650 than just vaping.

Lots of 18650 battery sleds in use. I know there was a time when multiple battery sizes were common with all the tube mods, but mainstream really settled in with the 18650s (and some 26650s out there). I'm not sure outside of specialty and custom builders how quickly it will be adopted by the "standard" companies now in the market. There's still the pressure relating to FDA and TPD regulations (although TPD doesn't seem to impact mods for now) so shifting might take a bit longer until folks feel there's a real benefit to the new form factor, and willing to replace or add new mods just to take advantage of a new battery.

Plus, an adapter is all we'll need to use 18650's in a 20700 space. I doubt 18650's are going away anytime soon.

Give it a couple of years and we'll see what the score is.

Hopefully in a couple of years we'll still be able to buy vape gear.

I have a few 26650 mods and batteries collecting dust.
Difficulty in finding quality cells played a huge part in them getting shelved.

The new 20700 cells sound interesting but until they are readily available from trusted manufacturers they are gonna stay in the niche market.

They wont replace 18650s.
Too much 18650 gear out there for that to happen.

I don't know if what I heard comes from a reliable source or not (i can't even remember where I heard it, to be honest). But, what I heard it's that the 20700 batteries were not created for vaping. Nor were they created for computers. They are manufactured for hybrid cars, if you can believe that. I have the Vaporz Cloud XXX mod right now. I plan to get the stacked extender for it, and later the Ijoy Capitan. For those that have a 20700 mod and no batteries for it. If you don't want to go through fasttech to get your batteries, you could try aspenvalleyvapes.com. at the moment, they have them. The are the Only batteries, not Sanyo, just so you know.

IMO we use 18650 cause they are the best choice, or were! the 20700 aren't much bigger & have quite a bit more capacity! check out the reviews right here on the site! True 30 amps 3000mAH up to 25% more capacity! Once we see the Sanyo 20700a readily available a lot of people will be switching.

I can't speak for every one, But my self I need better batteries! Now I have to bring 2 1300mAH 3S lipo mods with me to make a whole work day! A dual 20700 mod with 6000mAH's looks pretty good to Me :)

None of these cells were "designed for vaping".

Tesla uses stacked 18650s to power several models of automobiles.
They use them because it was cheaper than designing a proprietary cell and 18650s were easily sourced.

20700s were not "designed for hybrid cars" though some cars may use them.
