What happened to my Triton?

Today I received in the mail a new Triton tank and some e-liquid. I got the starter kit a couple of weeks ago and it's been going pretty well. I loaded up the new tank, waited for it to wick up, then tried to vape. When I pushed the button, it would blink 3 times then nothing. Not a big deal. I still have 2 tanks and 2 batteries. When I get home from work, I clean out one of the old tanks, change the coil, load it up (I'm really careful not to overfill) and stick it on the battery. After waiting a little while, I try to use it. When I push the button, the light starts flashing like crazy and the whole thing starts smoking. The house reeks. Then like an idiot, I tried to use the same tank on the other battery and guess what happened? So now I'm without any decent way to vape and I feel like a ..... for trying it on the second battery. I'm at a loss here. I'm going to have to make a 2 hour trip tomorrow to the nearest B&M to pick up something and try to live off some old Blu's till then so I don't go back to smoking cigarettes. Any ideas on what I did wrong (besides being stupid enough to ruin both my batteries lol)?

Yup, something shorted. It's not clear to me from your description of what happened what it was. Did you leave the new tank on after the batt flashed and it did not get warm? If that's the case I would look at the old tank. The tank having a short should not have made the battery go bad. It should have protection to avoid that. If it was more than one issue it could be tricky to diagnose.

Well, the batts are gone so they are not going to be an issue. I would get a digital multimeter and check the tanks for resistance. A short will be very low resistance. I bought a cheap one for about $15 I think and it does me well for vaping use. Also don't screw the tanks hard onto the batteries. Just enough to make contact pus another 1/8 turn is great.

Not truly an old tank. The original tank, I should have said. The one that came with the kit. It had been just fine and was what I had on that battery before trying the new tank.

I wonder if I do screw them on too tight. As of now, one battery has it's button lit constantly and the other is working but I'm a little nervous about using it.

you definitely had a short condition. The supposed protection is miss understood. Protection is for Internal Overload/Short. External short can rapidly damage the control head and fry internal wiring.
Battery with light on is likely done. Parts to repair are available but time/cost is not worth the effort.

You need to identify/correct the short or dispose of/return the defective tank and replace the lit battery.

The one that overheated but is now working/reset should be okay for use. It may not last as long as expected after the unintentional abuse. Batteries are only expected to last about 300 charge cycles anyway.

Got an email from Halo to mail the batteries back so they can check them and possibly replace them. While I'm disappointed this happened, the vape store I went to today was awesome. Got to try a ton of juices, picked up a Kanger Protank 2 and an eGo-C Twist. Thanks everyone for the great info. So glad I found this forum.
