Send him a Reo, it'll never break....even if it takes a bullet or 2

not quite bullet proof...

If I were deploying to Afghanistan I'd want to make sure I could wind my own coils. That would mean a Kayfun or Genesis tank with several 100' rolls of 30 and 28ga Kanthal. Provari would be fine or an MVP (slips in a patch pocket nicely).

Kanger heads are easy to recoil. Cotton shouldn't be hard to get in any country. Any Medic could spare him some cotton balls here and there for wicking. Several LiMN batts would be good in the care pack.

Pyrex is a good tank material, but it chips easily if the atomizer gets banged against metal. I recently had my Aspire Nautilus crack at the top thread from a fall where the drip tip banged something. Polycarbonate tank replacements are cheap and pretty tough. Short and fat tanks are stronger than the smaller diameter ones. He's bound to break something in the field if he has to scramble around and hit the dirt in a firefight. Even a flattened pack of smokes with still work, but a cracked tank is hard to recover from.

Then, there's juice availability. A bottle of Walmart Humco VG would be something I'd want in my care pack along with a few bottles of Lorann flavorings. Humco VG is a good no nic vape by itself if you are out. Flavorings that he likes would make it better. I'd want some 24mg PG nic base, too.

Another vote for the e-lvt. It functions almost exactly like the MVP as far as the display and controls but with the addition of an LED flashlight. Like the MVP, it has USB charging, as well as a USB output. It uses an 18650 battery, but requires an allen wrench to change it.

The thing is solid, and built to last. It weighs roughly the same as a VTR and has a thick rubber coating, similar to an Otter Box.

I've never used a Reo, but it would seem like an excellent choice as well.

That's a thought ... flashlight and USB charging for your phone if needed.

Don't use one....Yet, but after reading the Ops Post and studying various builds, REO would be the way to go.
More Compact almost all in one. Only threading to catch sand is the 510. Keep a Dripper installed and it should be safe.
No electronics to be concerned about.

I would be most concerned about keeping e-liquids useable. Again, the REO design allows for e-liquid recovery if it thins and runs.

I love my Nemesis, but could just imagine the Pains of cleaning out the switch constantly. Not to mention the added length in 18650 with a Full sized Kayfun on top.

i use my Innokin VTR when im outside, i do lawn care work. it is a pretty solid unit, not sure if it will be able to with stand afghan but hey.... its tough and i get it dirty as hell here. drop it and scuff it up, so far it is all good. not sure about what tank to get, i use a aerotank in mine and it is pretty good. not my favorite setup but i only use it when working, id rather hurt the VTR then any of my high end pieces.

but...... the more i think about it, that REO would probably be the best. no electronics to go wrong, if it acts up.... big IF...... you can just clean it up and move on. the REO would probably be the mod with the least amount of hassle. VTR and that ELVT would be alright too, they just have electronics in them so that is something you probably wouldnt be able to fix on the spot.

so i vote for a REO as well. i am gonna get one soon.....

Someone who was deployed in Afghanistan mentioned cheap eGo kits worked best. He said the sand made a total mess of everything including good mechs.

I can see sand being in everything. I take my Provari to the beach, but I'm careful not to let it roll off into the sand. I'm able to field strip it and clean it easily, but not everyone is technical. I agree with eGo, but the batts are sealed and glued together. If I were going to the sandbox, I'd look for a deal on multiple eGo batts to pack for the trip. If one gets run over by a tank, just break out a new one.

I can't speak to the mods, but OP, if your guy is going to be anywhere outside the wire (and even inside, depending on the base), "my" Marines (anymarine.com) have told me that dust/sand is a big problem. It's everywhere, gets into everything, and it can be as fine as talcum powder. They're always asking for a supply of baggies (ziplock are the best) they use to protect their equipment.

So be sure to throw in a box of Ziplocks in your package!
