1) more smoke!
2) Keep the LED. The glowing tip of a cigarette is for many an important part of the experience, and one of the things that makes smoking look "cool". In fact, make it glow all the time, and glow more when you take a drag. I would love that.
3) more styles, sizes, colors
4) better taste

I am stunned at how well these things produce a smoking experience without actual smoke. I think they are great as is, but I know they will get even better.

The part on the continous ON of the Led is good. Let's refine it.
For example, if one takes a puff, the led will be lit for 5 mins before going to OFF.
This will be more like a real cig..

Also, it will be great if there are multiple led rings on the battery body, so as one takes a puff, the lighted ring will advance one level. Till it reaches the battery's end(near the atomizer), to tell the user, "Hey, you smoked 1 stick already."

daedalusx360 - Excellent idea, I'd love to have a speaker that makes that burning sound when you take a drag.

lengendec - This is a great idea, though I am partial to the cigarette staying "long", if they sold one like you described I would buy it. Additional thought, how about when you are finished, even if you finish early, you can "stub it out" by tapping the end of it on a table, one or two taps and the LED goes out.

Was talking to njoy today and suggested a way to have the cigarette last about 7 minutes and then turn off for about 15 minutes to signal the user they have just smoked 1 cigarette. Without any details, I was told they are working on just that. Their only concern was for the chain smoker. Maybe they could have an override switch or perhaps a separate model without the timer.

After having used these things for a few weeks now, I agree with Klaue's post below. I don't think it's such a good idea after all (6/29/08).

That would be a very bad idea IMHO
sometimes I like to smoke a second cig right after my first - without having to wait 15 mins. A little timer that beeps after 5 minutes would be nice, but please no artiffical wait..

Here is what i would like to see,

A unit that is reliable and lasts me more than a week or two.

Easy, simple, haven't found it yet.

Answer: KISS Box.

We will see about that soon enough. I have high hopes for it, but it is still very new.

Features I would like:

More vapor
I like the "stop" indicator idea. But I would prefer a light beep instead of a light.
Ditch the end glow - to me this is cheesy. I like stealth :)
More flavor - Stronger on the tastebuds
More varied flavors -perhaps a masala chai flavor. Cardomom - yum!
I would also like an auto drip cartridge. It would last longer and possibly be easier to fill. See my design on the "needle" thread.
I would love some cig and pipe designs that are less traditional. I think there would be less stigma with the anti-smoking folk if the product did not look so much like the thing they despise.

General notes on look and feel.

These notes are applicable across the board, to all devices. I’ve been compiling them and adjusting them as I experiment with new brands and devices. I realize that some of these notes will be common requests, and thus repetitions, but in the interest of a thorough post, I have included everything. At present I have 11 different brands and devices. The Ruyan pipe offers the best flavor of any device I own. I would like a significantly greater volume of smoke, especially on exhale, but that said, I feel that flavor is the more important of the two, and thus am the most satisfied, of all my devices, with the pipe. The majority of the notes, however are on the cigarette-type devices, and not the pipe. ( My favorite cigarette is the the Super Cigarette that I got from e cigs shop. It has the largest volume of smoke, decent taste, small size, and is fairly reliable. Also, e cigs shop sells atomizers for $7, so I can stock up - although I'm still on my first after 2 weeks.)

The best aspect of electric smoking is that it does not harm the body like tobacco smoke. This is it’s main benefit and primary selling point. In every other respect, it should be as close as possible to tobacco smoking - starting with the aroma and volume of smoke, and continuing to the visual and tactile sensations of the device itself.

-The tip is important. I feel the gem-like casting is the wrong direction, it is too feminine. The proper direction is the “ash” tip, which will benefit from a more organic casting. Deeper more concentric grooves, more similarities to actual ash. The center plastic should be thinner than the sides for a more organic glow. The air holes on the side must be irregular in size and distribution across the circumference.

- wash of dark grey paint on the “ash” tip creates a more realistic look both when lit and when dark. See here:

ashtip.jpg

-LED on the tip requires more fluidity in operation. Upon the initial drag, it should go from dim/dark to full bright in 1 second. After the drag has stopped, it should go from full bright to dim in 3 seconds. It should remain at the lowest possible dimness for 20 seconds, or as long as a minute, and then go black. This will create a more living feel to the faux ember.

-Shorter more lightweight battery.

-At this point, the easiest way to hold cigs in the mouth, unaided, is with a mouthpiece. Shorten mouthpiece by 5mm to better facilitate holding between teeth. Of all the mouthpieces I’ve used, the e-cig.com mouthpiece is the easiest to hold unaided in the mouth. It is more rounded, shorter, there’s more of a taper going up to the barrel., and the nub at the end is larger, so it goes behind the teeth more solidly. It could primarily be improved by making it 5mm shorter.

-Different color mouthpieces in traditional colors : amber, off-white or cream, and tortoiseshell are good.

-Pipe mouthpieces should have more of a curve, almost a hook, to facilitate hanging from teeth, unsupported by hands.

-Flavor of smoke is lacking. The Ruyan pipe has the most flavor of all smoking devices I’ve tried, but it is still pretty minimal. I think that if the flavor was intensified across the board, there would be less of a barrier to the novice.

-Matte finish on the batteries is pretty good. It should be even more matte though. Cutting down on the reflections of all light is important. Also the matte finish is easier to grip and has a better patina over time. The gloss finish starts to dull and get scratched in spots, and it doesn’t age well.

-Light tan banding on the batteries is good. This could be improved further by a durable logo mark or stamp in either the same tan, dark red, or gold.

Notes on the smoking experience.

-The smoke itself is perhaps the strongest element of the smoking experience. The smell of the smoke and it’s movement around the face and in the environment. A just-lit cigarette triggers many feelings with the scent of the burning tobacco. The better the smell and taste of the smoke, the easier people will convert. Of all the smokers that have sampled my electric cigarettes, every one of them has said that the smoke tastes too sweet.

-Size of cigarette. A half-smoked cigarette is just about the perfect size. Slightly fatter than a regular cigarette, as most mini electric cigarettes are now, is fine, but the extra length is not good. Firstly because it is difficult to hold - the weight of the battery makes it awkward to hold as a regular cigarette. Secondly, longer cigarettes are feminine. Men are more put off by long cigarettes than they are by stout ones. I would be excited to see an electric cigarette that has the form factor of a half-smoked cigarette. Or cigarillo, or cigar, for that matter. It would be less cumbersome, and more familiar.

Classic smoking has a rich heritage of beautiful designs to reference. The vast majority of tobacciana is masculine in nature, and this is an aspect of electric smoking that can be improved upon dramatically. The disposable Ruyan cigar is a good first step in this vision, but still can benefit from improved materials.

You make many good points in your post, but (theres always a but isnt there :) One of the best selling points of the e-cig's are the fact that they dont produce any odor. I dont know about you but I don't like smeling like an ashtray..

Great ideas on this thread. Having been using the eciggy for more than a month, and I am now familiar with the problems with this contraption. I feel most of the problems are because of the design of the product. Making it look like a ciggy might be a good idea to introduce the product.. but that its killing the performance. I feel that someone needs to come up with better designs, better battery backup, bigger smoke, etc. and the product need not look like a ciggy at all.!! may be designs with double atomizers which look like cigarette lighters, or cell phones...!?
