Here's a good article: :)

Regulated mods, the sub-ohm myth? | Vape Scores

There are 2 main types of regulated mods on the market:

Bucking AKA Step-down: A type that takes a higher voltage from the battery, stepping it down before outputting a lower voltage to the atty. Anytime you step voltage down, your available amperage increases inversely and proportionately.

-Boosting AKA Step-up: A type that takes a lower voltage, stepping it up before outputting a higher voltage to the atty. Anytime you step voltage up, your available amperage decreases inversely and proportionately.

Many VW devices out there cannot output less voltage than the battery is providing... It will just dump whatever the battery voltage is at the time to the atty.. This can result in your vape being hotter than you may like, depending upon the resistance of your coil.. Step-down will allow you to actually run a lower voltage than the battery is providing.

Thank you for the help. :) I'm in the process of replacing my Itaste VTR, so now I know what to look for. :)

Addition: Since the VTR has got VV is has step-down too then?

The VTR does step down, but you have to wary of descriptions of features on high-wattage APV's in the market today. They might express a range of voltage in the product description - and that's all very fine - except it's directly tied to a minimum wattage setting only. In other words that range of output voltage is nothing you can adjust. In this case the information is anecdotal but doesn't tell you how the device actually functions.

Pick some you are interested in and then go looking at the reviews and discussions about them. Any that have that "can't step down" limitation will be called out in reviews and discussions pronto.
