What is the actual toxicity of the juice?

I think I've seen the skull and crossbones on a few juices. IMO it's just because of the nicotine. I'm pretty sure VG, PG and food flavorings are safe to eat, since we already eat it. The vapor has been found comparable to the air in a medium city from what I've read. I think the skull and crossbones is just there to appease the ANTZ.

A lethal dose of nicotine is no less than .5 grams of 99.9% pure (pharmaceutical grade) nicotine.

Nicotine sulphate has been the poison of choice in a Columbo episode and various other detective shows.

I don't even know what "18mg" as the strength of the juice I buy means.

Just trying to quantify the risk.

Currently there is a lot of debate in the scientific world about this,

"Nicotine is a toxic compound that should be handled with care, but the frequent warnings of potential fatalities caused by ingestion of small amounts of tobacco products or diluted nicotine-containing solutions are unjustified and need to be revised in light of overwhelming data indicating that more than 0.5 g of oral nicotine is required to kill an adult."

How much nicotine kills a human? Tracing back the generally accepted lethal dose to dubious self-experiments in the nineteenth century

"Indeed, more recent studies have shown that intravenous administration of up to 5 mg of nicotine, corresponding to 25 mg oral, i.e., 50 % of the allegedly lethal dose, led to only minor adverse effects, such as coughing and nausea (Henningfield et al. 1983; Gourlay and Benowitz 1997")

So the answer really is nobody actually knows right now but it is safe to say don't drink e-liquid like tea, but a splash from your atty isn't going to kill you unless you've been very stupid with your juice.

It means the concentration of nicotine in that liquid is 18mg per milliliter, or 1.8% -- no one in their right mind would consider that highly concentrated -- nor even the 100mg (10%) that DIYers use. But the 18mg, if you swallow much of it, will make you vomit -- if you're anything like me, that right there is A Fate Worse Than Death. :D If you get nicotine on your skin, it can and will absorb, which will bump up your dosage maybe more than you realize -- and again, wouild likely cause nausea/vomiting, if it goes too high. Or any of those other unpleasant symptoms of nic OD. But at these levels, it's the kind of OD that you know about, WELL before it approaches anything truly dangerous, so you can stop doing whatever you're doing that's causing your nic level to go so high.

Directly to the OP: Nicotine overdose from getting some juice in your mouth isn't going to happen. If you actually get enough that you feel you need to spit it out, just spit it out, rinse your mouth with water and you'll be right as rain. Nicotine concentrations as they exist in ready to vape juice are not dangerous unless you're chugging it instead of vaping it.

I`m probably good for a teaspoon or so a day from spit back, licking bottles, licking atty`s, licking this and that, LOL. Just don`t get it in your eyes, its no fun.

The actual toxicity is completely dependent on the strength, method of ingestion, body mass, and metabolism of the entity consuming the product. Given these variables, its impossible to nail down the actual level for any given individual or creature.

Yep, that's the great thing about the drug nicotine...it's self-titrating. One knows long before even close to a lethal dose is ingested that they've had enough nicotine. That's more than can be said about a lot of "other stuff" one might choose to partake in.

sure people here are talking about 'fatal' amounts, but from personal experience I can say I've had some close calls. I spilled some 36mg on my hands probably around 10ml, and I got sick and stomach pains. When I used to vape 24mg on a kanger aerotank also, I kept sucking up juice due to one of my coils being burnt out (didnt know at the time that my coil was dead and not holding juice) so I kept vaping it and accidentally sucking up juice, that night I had real bad stomach cramps throughout the entire night. Since then I've dropped to <12mg just to be safer not to experience those kind of episodes again. It may not be fatal at these dosages but it sure hurts like hell.

I agree, it's very unpleasant; I'm completely phobic, all my life, about nausea/vomiting, so anything that even MIGHT cause that, I want no part of! Which is what I meant about the guys at the first shop I ever went to nearly persuading me that I'd never be able to vape, when they suggested 18mg -- even 12mg makes me nauseous, and those sharp abdominal pains too. Thank goodness I persevered down to 6mg, and was able to raise my level very slowly to my current, and long-time, 10mg. It seems to be just the right level for my now-relaxed style of vaping, but at first, when I was chainsmoking every waking minute, it had to be 6mg. :D

yep those stinging stomach pains scared the hell out of me, they reminded me of the pain I felt when I had a kidney stone. Never wanna go down that road again so I just kept lowering my nic level and vape more, rather than keeping it high and vape less. Just as a safety net if something does go wrong again it will be less likely to lead to something serious.
