I'm just looking to start building my own coils on my protank heads. My question is what wire do i get ? Im seeing Kanthal A-1, D, Flat D Wire which is making this very confusing ... which type of kantal do i get and what gauge is best to get for the protank ?

32 can also work well. Anything bigger than 30 (i.e. 28, 26) gets too big to fit.
I've used 32 and 30 ga kanthal A-1. I prefer 30 ga.
7-8 wraps around a 5/64th drill bit gives around 2 ohms. 32 ga will give a little higher, closer to 2.5. But you could also wrap around a 1/16 drill bit to bring the resistance down a bit, but I like to keep my coils around 1.8-2.0 ohms for my devices.
You can squeeze in a coil with 28 ga kanthal, but it's a tight fit.
