50%Vegetable Glycerin 50%Propylene Glycol. Propylene Glycol aka PG is thinner than VG and is supposed to carry flavor better than VG whereas VG is a thick liquid that provides more and denser vapor. Its really just a personal preference thing.

Some people (myself included) dilute there VG with a small amount of distilled water to thin it out and make it wick better.

eliquid is most commonly made with a ratio of Pg (propylene glycol) and Vg (vegetable glycerin).

Propylene glycol is best known as the flavor carrier and contributes to the throat hit, although not as much as the nicotine concentration.

Vegetable glycerin is best known as the vapor maker, and has a semi-sweet taste.

Propylene Glycol is thinner and more runny, produces less vapor, but produces a more pure flavor, and has a stronger throat hit.

Vegetable Glycerin is thicker and less runny, produces more vapor, but tends to mute the flavor and has a slight sweetness of it's own, and has little to no throat hit.

Finding the right balance for you is the tricky part. You may want bigger clouds but prefer the more pronounced flavors. You may want more throat hit to feel more like you're smoking, or you may want something smooth to take big lung hits with. 50/50 is a good starting point as you can quickly decide if you want more flavor and throat hit or more vapor.

Also, be aware that few retail tanks and clearos can take high Vegetable Glycerin juices. They just don't have the right wicks for that thick of a juice. Unless you plan on building your own coils and wicks you don't want a really thick juice.

What is the difference between vegetable glycerin and 50/50

hello cleggjm, welcome to ECF

you kinda asked two questions in one sentence...

might explain better to you if worded like this:
what is the difference between, Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
PG=thin, carries more flavor // VG=thick, clouds, less flavor (in general)

what is meant by 50/50 %
50/50%= the ratio of each (PG & VG) in the liquid you buy/make

myself, PG irrates my throat, so I prefer a 40/60% (PG/VG) ratio or higher VG %
normally I mix up 25/75 or 20/80 (PG/VG) ratios

:)
