Really? I think Evic Clapton was way ahead of his time, unlike the Rolling Clones.Ok there is no nice way of saying this. Clapton is the most overrated guitarist of all time.
Clapton's guitar is one, of many, that absolutely sing to me. That's far from a technical evaluation, but my ears definitely know what my brain likes.
I'm not a big fan of the Stones either.
I am curious, in what way or ways do you think Clapton was ahead of his time?
He started re-making 40 year old blues tunes even before Zeppelin did!
I like Clapton. He has an exceptional ability to communicate, and emote, with his music.
He's not an outstanding technical guitarist - nothing he plays is particularly difficult or anything - but he connects with people through his music.
There are a TON of outstanding technical guitarists that aren't ever going to get famous...
SO...not an exceptional guitar player really, but an exceptional artist and musician (because I include that ability in "musicianship") who plays guitar.
Opposite end of spectrum - perhaps Satriani, who IS technically outstanding - but whose popularity was somewhat limited because he's NOT particularly connecting emotionally.
The one's I rank highest are those who combine
a) CREATIVITY and talent on the instrument - perhaps technical, perhaps not
and
b) The emoting thing
Examples:
Jimi (totally inventive use of the instrument, and emotional immersion far beyond most musicians)
Eddie (creative use of the instrument - he invented some stuff)
Santana (a little of both)
there's certainly more...those are good examples though...
Sometimes technical gets in my way of liking someone -
Like Jimmy Page. I like Zeppelin - because of the drums. Page was just so damned sloppy, it bugs me. But he was creative and emoted, so I'm not gonna argue if he's in your list.

FWIW I made a living for a number of years playing guitar.
I think Eric is a decent human being and I respect all he has done for blues and the real blues men who were largely forgotten or never recognised by the mainstream. I've seen him live and the show was very entertaining, the large band was excellent. His early playing with John Mayall I still listen to occasionally. It is my opinion that he peaked with Cream, Layla has its moments. He has an excellent sense of time, melody and harmony not so much.
I find his playing kind of repetitive and uninspired. He is a lick player. I don't think Clapton thinks he is one of the greatest guitar players either.
Listen to these and see what you think. IMO one of them is a great guitar player imo.
