Foreword:

I work for an international company. vaping in our offices has become an issue. This lead to a meeting of all the department heads across the world.

Our departments have no contact with each other normally and do not even work in the same arena most of the time, so a bunch of power mongering individuals in a room fighting about something no one really knows squat about got way out of hand. BONKERS

The argument stopped being about whether we could vape in house or not and started to be about the safety of the product. With several nudges that we are not the FDA, it was decided that each department head could make its own choice and post it clearly for all employees to see. Alright resolved.

NOPE: I went on to the company forums and it is an all out war today. Absolute war. I have never in my life heard such propaganda from both sides of the argument. I couldn't believe it. So today I posted this as a pro vaper... if I am not fired later I hope it hits home.

_____________________________________________________________________________

I am a ranter and a raver. I point fingers and I name names. I usually do this very quickly when I get a gusto in me. But when it comes to ECIGS and vaping, I have taken my time to carefully consider my stand and thus my delivery of said opinions.

I am not going to say anything that hasn't already been said by hundreds of people, I'm just going to get to hard point in a more direct way. So hunker in and get settled. Grab your favorite juice and get your vape on, because this is what it all vapors down to.

I work in the sciences department you could say. I play in the big leagues, with the big boys, and we make seriously big waves when we work. So I know all about the David and Goliath complex that takes place in the big bad world of politics and corporate giants VS the little new guy on the block. The game of monopoly has been being played since the dawn of Man. There is always some group of people trying to dominate another through resources, intimidation or some not so obscure form of enslavement. Likely with the barbaric tendencies we have not seemed to rid ourselves of and the over powering primal reptilian brain functions, human beings will never stop finding ways to kill, mame, and punish our own.

With that precursor, I will stop drive by shooting at the situation and lay it out clean. We can't say ECIGS are healthier, we can't claim they have no long term health effects or problems, we can't say they can help you quit smoking... hell we can't say anything that pertains to the future. There was a time when cigarettes were seen as having no dangers. There was a time when asbestos was seen as the greatest invention next to slice bread. When you know better you do better.

And that is it right there. When you know better... you do better. That is our claim. As ECIG supporters and users, this should become your mantra. We know better, so we are doing better.

Let's get the dialogue open. We need to put our vape to the test. Research is research and that is the only stone we get to throw at Goliath. Anything else just makes us as bad as the big guy that is stomping on us.

It's true we have less chemicals in our mock up. But can you quantify the safety of all of these chemicals? Stop saying there are only 4... because that's a load of perverted information. There are way more than 4 chemicals in Vapor Juice.

Let's just overlook Vegetable Glycerin altogether and step on over to Propylene Glycol a synthetic compound derived from natural gas. Nope, I am not bagging on PG, but we can not actually say with 100% certainty that any grade of PG is safe to inhale long term. We just can't, even though we know comparatively it will never measure up to the damage that a Cigarette can do. We are in no position to actually say that about VG either. Although scientifically VG is going to test out safer than PG time and time again, there is no guarantee to quantify that yet. Even some asthma inhalers have been recalled over the years due to their carrying agents being in question.

We all know what Nicotine is. Period. We know we shouldn't be consuming it on the level that a smoker wants and additively requires. This is one that is hard to argue. It's common sense. There is years and years and years of research about what large doses of nicotine can do to the tissues within a mammal. That's nicotine alone, not combusted, not burning, just introduced into the mammals system over time in a non naturally occurring amount. So I am not even going to argue this one.

The food flavors we use to flavor our vapors are not single chemical agents. We can't say that there are only four agents in our vapor because food flavoring on their own contain multiple chemical compounds and substances that can not be categorized as one single ingredient. When you break down what goes into a natural or artificial flavor to make it possible any chemist will tell you, it's not one item. With it's intended use we have seen no real ill effects. But we are not using it for its intended use now are we?

Okay so PG, VG, Flavorings and Nicotine. Them's the 4. I know you are already preparing your angry comments... but relax... take another deep vape and let me reign this back in.

That break away is there for a reason, Education is everything. When it comes to bringing down a giant... or even competing with him, you have got to know your goods. From here on today, we got's to know our goods!

I have been hanging my head over my mothers candy making pots for the last 30 years. I have inhaled more that 5000 varieties of candy in the hot boil stage, I have been cooking in her kitchen for 3 decades, she cooked in hers for 7 decades, my grandmother cooked in hers for 9 decades, and my great grandmother cooked in hers for 10 decades. That's a combined 129 years of sniffing in the kitchen.129 years of inhaling food flavorings... that's right, my great grandmother was making food flavorings before I was a twinkle in my Daddy's eye. Although all three of them are gone now, not one of them lived less than 80 years. I trust my mother and her nose to this day, and I am going out of my way to study food flavoring intensely just to back it up.

Nicotine is a choice, have it or don't. My personal goal is to wean off it, you make your own goal. But vaping... that I will be doing long after the nicotine is out of my system.

I don't use PG, except what is in the food flavorings I use, but that is a choice too. I'm a VG girl. Maybe it's from years of working the lab. Right now I trust it more. When I know better... I do better. Period.I will defend to my death that ECIGS helped me quit smoking. I quit the day I got mine. I've never gone back. I never will.

I'm ready to challenge the giant. Bring it on Goliath, because you done messed with the wrong girl. I know the ins and outs. I know my way around the lab and I am ready to dance.

This is a serious issue and its going to take serious people to solve it. David threw a stone, times have changed... this isn't the play ground anymore. Sticks and stones my break your bones... but words will crush you. I have got a boulder full of words... educational ones. Scientifically advancing ones. It's time we started using them.

It is an out right crime to knowingly slowly poison people until they die. It's murder. Apparently it stops being called murder if you slap a label on it saying by the way...this will kill you, but we're going to make sure you are mighty addicted to it so that you want to slowly kill yourself of your own accord. In my books that's assisted suicide, it's slow, but it's to the point. I suppose that's why I am a scientist and not a lawyer...

I should have the right to kill myself any old way I chose. If I want to vape myself to death, if it can even muster up the toxicity to kill me...than so be it... stop interfering with it. The argument here for me is "Why is the tobacco company allowed to legally, factually and scientifically kill me but I am not allowed to inhale a chemical compound that they use in any other form but the one that pads their pocket?"

I hate to argue principles here...

Education is the only thing that can stop the giant. The real enemy is ignorance. That is solvable. We can educate ourselves. We can educate others. It doesn't have to be aggressive. It doesn't have to be with unsubstantiated claims of grandeur. They have to go through a process... and so do we. So let's get on that. If we want to affect change we have to be active in it. Let's know the concerns, and address them with solutions, not accusations.

We don't have to prove cigarettes kill people. That's proven. That is not what we are up-against. No one is actually asking us to prove that vaping doesn't kill people either, because they can not actually do that. I mean cars can kill people, but they are not removed from the road based on that assessment. Same goes for guns. It's all about their users. And regulating them so that they are used as safely as they can be.

Regulations may suck, they may make it a bit harder for the small guys, but they are important... so that some big guy can't get a legal license to kill us again. Because once that license is given, its damn near impossible to revoke it... Isn't that right Mr. Big Puff Tobacco Company. Accountability is everything. I can get behind that.

Medicines go through trials before they hit the market... machinery the same deal... let them test it. Ask them too. Be less afraid of the outcome and more afraid of what will happen if we don't start making them force us to be accountable. Don't you want to know what we are doing here?

I drink alcohol... I know the consequences and I chose to do it anyway. Most of the time within reason...some times not so much. I knew the consequences when I smoked... I am totally prepared for the consequences of vaping. I have stuck my tongue to more than one cold metaphorical metal pole in my life time, if I have to rip it off again I will. But I like my odds with this one. I can breathe deeper, walk farther, and taste things better since I stopped analogs.

I'm reading books, and working on ways to make the safest juices possible. As I know better... I do better and that is what it all Vapors down to!

uuuuummmmm.... Happy New Year?

EDIT: In all seriousness, I can see you are very passionate about this and have decided to draw a line in the sand. If you are mad now, wait till you read the various tricks organizations have tried.

One of the main obstacles is that vaping is being immediately lumped into the same category as smoking. Judging from past actions, that is not surprising as it is the easy approach to swaying public opinion. They just piggy back on the extremely bad publicity of cigarettes.

There is an organization CASAA which has been doing excellent work in educating the public about vaping and have been instrumental in making the finer points about how vaping is guilty by "appearance". There are specific threads for that in this forum that are easy to find.

As for the regulations, I don't think any reasonable person would be against them. I think people want fair, unbiased and proper regulations that aren't based on the scam methods that have been tried. Once you have government agencies not being truthful, then it becomes hard to rely on them for fair, unbiased and proper regulations.

Again, Happy New Year!!

All I can say is I hope they read it and use an open mind reading it. If the powers that be decide to target you on posting your opinion then they are not as enlightened as they think they are. If they let you go over this.......................... well, there's always a lawyer to talk to. May help, may not.

Just my 2 uneducated cents thought.

It is my understanding that hospitals use PG vapor to deliver inhaled medications. This came from a thoracic surgeon a member knows who said it is even used with lung transplant patients. Concert fog is PG vapor. But I believe VG has a chance of releasing Acrolein (an irritant and possible carcinogen) at temperatures over 280 degrees.

I use high-PG juices myself and I am not using extreme heat.

You are right about flavorings though. We know we have to avoid diacetyl and maybe triacetin (sp?) and I would be pleased if that was regulated so vendors had to stop using flavors with those chemicals or any others believed to be unsafe to inhale.

Good luck to you. I've only been vaping a short time, but it does seem to me from personal observation that harm reduction theories and the fact that vaping isn't really smoke don't really matter to the most vehement members of the anti-smoke crowd. To them, whether it's less harmful than an analog or not, whether it's a vapor or not, it's still poison being exhaled into their personal airspace. There's a heavy level of irrational fear attached to vaping because it looks so similar to smoking and because the majority aren't educated about it. I don't think e-cigs are going to see a widespread welcome in public spaces without a huge fight, even though they're less harmful than traditional cigarettes. Non-smokers don't care. Sad but true.

Well , all that being said . I for one can say that vaping has helped me out tremendously health wise . I smoked 2 packs a day for nearly 45 years . So at 60 + I look more like a 70 year old . But first let me give you my health rundown . I have blood disease ( chronic Leukemia ) and has caused me to get blood draws (pint ) about every two months , for the last 15 years . I also have sleep apnea , diabetes type 2 , cataracts , dermatitis , and other assorted ailments . Now after vaping for 8 months , my latest visit to my hematologist ( blood doctor ) gave me all the proof I needed , that I had made the right decision . My last blood draw , was almost 6 months ago , my wife says my sleep apnea has all but disappeared . I have less chest congestion , my sinus headaches has disappeared . And now can sleep laying down in a regular bed , instead of sleeping in a recliner . So in my humble opinion , Good , bad , or otherwise . The day I quit smoking , and started vaping , my health and well being have improved daily . Is it perfect , no . We are still inhaling substance into our bodies , that may prove , down the road , to not be real good for us . But given my overall health improvements , I just don't care . If a time comes when it's proven to be detrimental to my health , then I'll go down that road , if I'm even still alive . And that's my .02 worth .

Thank you Beech. a very eloquent, factual yet emotional presentation. I believe because TW won in court against the FDA the ANTZ have decided to take this "battle" to a lower level- municipal, state and corporate. If aliens ever descended down upon this planet they would ask "What were they thinking"
Thanks again for putting my feelings and outrage into words.
Happy New Year, Vapoor.

Let's call it what it is. When people who hate tobacco rail against vaping, they engage in bigotry. There isn't a nicer word for it. Bigotry is the intersection of ignorance and hatred. If anybody has a better single word that describes the phenomena, I'm all ears.

Many of the real zealots in the anti-tobacco crowd honestly don't give a hoot if anybody smokes or not. Their motivation comes from a need to feel superior and control others. They don't care about your health; they want to force you to abide by their rules. Therefore, it pisses them off when you (an ex-smoker) find a way to "smoke" without smoking. These are people who not only deserve to be ignored - they deserve to be silenced.

I completely agree -- for many, it's not really about health, it's about control. And there is indeed a very healthy measure of bigotry involved.

I have actually been very surprised about the amount of misinformation that gets spouted by anti-smoking campaigns. But I wish it were just them... Even vapors in their zeal to defend their ground can do as much damage to the cause by giving out totally unfounded information. This is what lead tot he near verbal riots within my company.

It's still a mad house up in here, but it's all about timing I believe. People fear change... And we need to make sure that we educate on this change wisely.

Thanks to everyone for the support and the dialogue. It has given me much to think about when dealing with my departments.

Thank you Murdock Ruml, and everyone here. It's been an interesting couple of days on the company site, I will update with any new information when it becomes available. We have a fairly close relationship with the FDA within the corporation departments and a meeting has been set. Fingers crossed. Since I haven't been fired...perhaps they will let me attend!
