What It Was Like To Quit Smoking … before E-cigs

I read “Trace” by Patricia Cornwell a couple of weeks ago. A Scarpetta novel. It was a fairly good mystery until I got to page 385. There was where she wrote the most eloquent description of what it is like to quit smoking I’ve ever come across.

“Inside the tobacco shop the air is pungent and sweet with a symphony of tobacco scents that fill him with a longing he doesn't understand and immediately blames on smoking. He misses it like hell. He is sad and upset be.cause he misses cigarettes, and his heart hurts and he feels shaken somewhere deep inside his very soul because he knows he'll never be able to smoke again, not like he used to, he just can't do it. He was kidding himself to think he might sneak one or two now and then. What a myth to think there was any hope. There is no hope. There was never hope. If anything is hopeless, his insatiable lust for tobacco, his desperate love for tobacco, is hopeless, and he is suddenly crushed by grief because he will never light up a cigarette and deeply inhale and feel that rush, that sheer joy, that release he aches for every minute of his life. He wakes up aching, he goes to sleep aching, he aches in his dreams and he aches when he is wide awake.”

And that is exactly what I went through each and every time I tried (and failed) to quit. Until I got my starter kit in the mail. I quit smoking that day … painlessly … and I’ve been happily vaping ever since.

Am I grateful to have discovered ECF, CigEasy, and all the help/knowledge available here?

Oh ... just about daily.

I love her novels but I listen to them in audio. I'm usually too busy to sit and ready anymore. What a great passage! Yes, I miss it in a sick sort of way. It was like saying good-bye to dear friend that passed on. But with time, all things mend and I've found new best friends: Buzz, Prodigy, 510, eGo, Riva, ProVari, ProVape-1, alpha ultra max w/res, 5v PT's, and too many new friend flavors. Yet the biggest bonus of friends are right here on ECF. Without you all, I wouldn't have made as far as I have. Thank you to all my new friends for replacing the old one.

I promised myself 20 years ago I would stop reading mushy heart felt stories or poems just after I decided to quit writing them. Yours was a good read however. I believe tons of ex-smokers still feel this way and it's sad.. I know ex-smokers who feel this way. I can't tell them to start using an e-cig. Many ex-smokers are down right ...... that they quit before they were introduced to an e-cig believing they could never use one for fear it will make them want an analog. Some folks who had to quit for health reasons feel like this and have a really hard time understanding how we can so casually continue to vape. I don't have any answers for these folks and I wish I did because I love vaping my e-cig so much I never wish to stop.

I have quit smoking (without vaping) for a 5 year period and a 7 year period. I was married and did not care about weight gain. I also had a strong motive both times--I didn't want my kids to see me smoking and end up smoking themselves. My kids are now adults and none of them smoke, so I feel like I did the right thing.

Now that I am single again and my kids are grown, I am very sensitive to weight gain and I have struggled with motive to quit. While single I've tried to quit smoking (without vaping) a few times. I had a lot of motive to start with, but after gaining ten or fifteen pounds in a month I lose all my motivation. I experienced significant weight gain even when subsisting on a diet of rabbit food.

My main motive now is to avoid getting COPD or emphezema. Vaping allows to me to stay with this motive because I have not experienced weight gain while vaping.

One of my fears of quitting cigs was weight gain. I quit cold turkey (2 PaD) 17 years ago for ten weeks. Besides being beyond miserable, I gained 27 pounds. That was the only time in my life being overweight. Lost most of it when I restarted cigs.

Since I stopped cigs this time and started vaping I've actually lost a couple of pounds! That's soooo surprising in that if you look up 'midnight snacks' in the dictionary (whoops, just dated myself) you'll find my photo. Now... I just vape instead of raiding the ice box (drats, did it again).

BTW, I vape waaay more than I ever smoked... :vapor:

I had quit about 7 or 8 times in the past. Tried the gum, patch, cold turkey, gradually weaning and none of it worked. I didn't just feel like I lost my best friend but rather part of my soul. I also became so miserable and unpleasant that my not-yet-ex wife came home from work after I had gone about a week without a smoke, threw a pack of cigs at me and said "For the love of Christ PLEASE start again!"

Maybe I should bury my analogs.... cremation seems to risky! I did, and possibly still do(its only been a few weeks) have sick twisted relationship with ciggarettes. I dont miss them, nor do I think I quit....I switched. I LOVE MY RIVA... its an upgrade from what I was using. Eciggs and the ECF have made my life better. Thanks to you all!

Welcome,

I've been vaping almost a year now. I found it's really not a big deal to make the switch from smoking to vaping so I wouldn't be concerned about it so close to your wedding. At first, you think it's going to be a big deal, but it becomes routine quickly and you don't give smoking a second thought. I've actually tried smoking a ciggy three times since I started vaping just to compare. I still much prefer the taste and feel of vapes. That's the great thing about vaping, you're not giving up smoking, you're upgrading to a better way of getting the satisfaction of smoking.

Of course, there are people that look at vaping as a stepping stone to quitting, but you don't have to look at it that way unless you want to. I have no plans to give up vaping or even give up nicotine in my juice.

I see vaping as a stepping stone to more vaping. More flavor ... less death.

Great post Bob, thanks. I used to enjoy tobacco so much I could almost eat it. I enjoyed all forms, from Reds to rollies , to cigars to pipes to chew, yes chew, best thing when your flyfishing.

I quit once, many times actually and remember vividly sitting in my dr's office, in a paper gown, after a physical filling out a 120 count questionnaire to figure out what was wrong. I actually scored highly with major depression. Went away when I smoked my first cigarette...

This is smoking. Now, I'm on day 48 with vaping. Never went this long, ever. Haven't missed more than maybe 5 smokes during that time.
