Right now I'm listening to "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" by Lynryd Skynyrd. I completed my dissertation on "Using Music in the Language Arts Classroom" (the abbreviated title LOL) This all came about from listening to The Alan Parsons Project album "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" when I was very young. All of the songs are based on works by (THE MAN) Edgar Allan Poe. I've used many other artists that have covered works of literature such as Iron Maiden and Metallica, just to name a few. Basically songs that made a direct reference to or used a piece of literature for a song. I'm looking to use "The Ballad of Curtis Loew" as an assignment where the students create a work of "literature" by writing a story that could be the basis for the song. In essence I'm using what I call "reverse interpretation" wherein the previous artists I mentioned wrote a song based on a work of literature, I'm wanting the students to do the opposite. Hope this makes sense.
Yep! That is one of the pieces I used as well. I love Richard Burton as the narrator. My best friend turned me on to this; he had the LP (which I now have).
Expanding on my idea in the "Curtis Loew" post. I'm getting a bit ambitious by using a full album for an assignment. Also this is one of my favorite albums of all time.
