Often, there is a story behind the song and, for a break, I snoop to find the story. This one, written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell was originally recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969, but made most popular by The Hollies that same year. Father Flanagan, of Boys Town fame in Nebraska, came up with the term in 1941 as a motto for the boy’s home. However, in 1921, there was a boy at Boy’s Town that had difficulty walking in his leg braces and, so, other boys would take turns carrying him. There is a statue depicting this idea at each of the campuses. Hollies guitarist Tony Hicks said: "In the 1960s I looked for songs, basically, anywhere". The demo was played and it sounded like a 45rpm record played at 33rpm, the singer was slurring, like he was drunk. But, it had something about it. There were frowns when I took it to the band but we speeded it up and added an orchestra. The only things left recognizable were the lyrics.
