There's a product called Ozium that cruise ships use to remove the smell of smoke from cabins. A testament to how good it works is that Carnival Cruise Lines, for example, doesn't designate smoking and non-smoking cabins, and most cabins don't have fresh air.

You can buy it in automotive stores.

Drug stores - CVS as I recall - used to carry it as well. Some drug store chains may have it. And medical supply stores if you know of any in your area. (Hospitals use it a lot.)

Ozium was the greatest thing out there for over three decades to deal with air borne odor elimination - until Febreze came along. I've used them both, and used Ozium since the 1980's, and IMO Febreze is much more effective. And Ozium isn't to be used for direct contact with surfaces such as spraying on fabrics, curtains, sofas etc. as you can do with Febreze.

Just my :2c:

We recently started remodeling our kitchen. We both smoked at the time and the walls needed to be cleaned before we could paint. Nicotine was really bad. After searching the net to find out what to clean them with, found out that Scrubbing Bubbles works the best! So off to the Dollar General and bought their brand for cheap! OMG! I cleaned like a champ and the new paint had no problem sticking! So just goes to show you more expensive is not always better!! And it smelled pretty good too! And cleans the bathroom pretty good too! Antibacterial to boot!! LOL! Just sharing my experience with ya'll!!

See if you can get your hands on an ozonator. It's. little machine you plug in that kills all the organic particles in the air that cause smell. Ok a really lame explanation, but it's the thing you use to get rid of dead body smells, grow smells and other smells that are in fabrics and walls. It works great!
