As soon as I read "fixing to" I knew that you were from the south, and more than likely Texas. I lived in the Dallas area for about 10 years ('80-'90) and although I DON'T miss the traffic, there are many things I do miss.
Anyhow, back to cotton. I use cotton cooking twine that I get from BBY. I do boil it, twice, because it is natural, unbleached. I then use a bead needle (hobby lobby) to pull some of the strands into the coil. How many strands depends on how big the coil. For my 1/16" drill bit wrap, I use 3 (doubled over to make 6 in the coil) and 4 (doubled over to make 8) for the flavor wicks.
Works great for me but as always, YMMV.
