What's the best way to suggest an e-cig to long time heavy smoker?

I too had no intention of quitting analogs (smoked for 33 yrs, a carton/wk) but I have not had one since the first week of this year, three days after I got my first E-Cig. My mother has been smoking for longer than I. A week ago I was talking to her and she mentioned she had got some filters to reduce the tar etc. from her cigarettes. So naturally I began to tell her about what I had found, she never heard of them.

Today is her 74th birthday, so last week I ordered a dse901 and a bottle of juice and had it sent to her. Mind you 9 years ago she never wanted a computer until I built one for her, now she wouldn't know what to do without the internet. I also e-mailed her some links to a few select youtube videos. She got it a few days ago, but I think she was kind of afraid to try it. She lives in FL so I can't just walk over there. But I talked to her and got her started charging the batteries. When I call her today I will find out if she tried it or coach her along a little. It sounds bad, but if it fails, I guess I can add a 901 to my growing arsenal. Don't give up, the benefits far outwiegh continuing analogs.

I'd say the best bet would to not harangue them about quitting or switching to a PV. Rather present it to them as a new novel way to enjoy 'tobacco', with some really neat flavors and less health risks.

Then once they decide that they like it, you can push the healthier aspect of it and maybe help them along making the switch. Afterall even if they do not completely quit analogs a cigarette skipped is a cigarette skipped right?

There are several suppliers that sell "disposable" models. I would suggest buying a couple and handing them out. This way the perosn won't feel "funy" about trying yours.

Buy the disposables for them, give them to them and leave them alone. By this I mean even if they don't use it in your presence it is theirs and they may give it a try after you leave........

Some folks my be self conscious about trying it for the first time in front of someone else. If they are a long time smoker, it may make it easier for them to try if they don't have to give an immediate reaction to someone.

With how well ecigs have worked for many of us, we tend to be a little overzealous in our support. We all know annoying people who are a bit to forward in their support of something(their church, sports team, PETA, etc...). We should try to not be that annoying...:D

Good Luck

I agree with everything you said. I tried to introduce my Mom to e-cigs. She's been an analog smoker for 40+ years. She didn't get it, mostly because of the manual battery on my 510. Her lungs are also cashed, so she could barely take the vapor.

In short, give a n00b something with an auto bat and some juice that is smooth and doesn't give massive throat hit. It hurts smoker's screwed lungs to inhale vapor. Figure that one out.

It reminds me of the Tom and Jerry cartoon. When the mouse was in "school" and one of the test was to tie a bell around the cat's neck. Jerry (the "teacher" mouse) tried to slip the bell around Tom's neck while he was sleeping, and against his will. He soon found himself encountering resistance and in serious trouble. The "student" mouse wrapped up the bell as a gift and gave it to Tom. Tom was so pleased to have gotten a gift that he promptly put the bell on and began playing with it...........................

Just a thought.................

EDIT: I cannot believe I remembered that. It was over 30 years ago...............sheesh and I can't remember lunch yesterday:rolleyes:

Update:
It turns out that she tried to buy a PV last summer and ended up buying from one of those scam places. She paid over $100 and only got the carts (I assume they were actually cartomizers). She never got any batteries or anything else whatsoever. The kicker is that there were recurring charges and she kept getting sent more carts in the mail (that's what leads me to believe they were actually cartomizers). She eventually had to cancel her credit card and get a new one.

After I showed her mine (she didn't want to try the spare batt with a fresh cart for some reason) she told me that she heard that PV's are worse than smoking. I guess the FDA press release really got the rumor mill going. I explained to her what the e-liquids contain and where else these ingredients are found and consumed. She seemed excited to give it another shot.

I told her to buy a 510 from Cignot so hopefully she will get into it. I'm sure there are tons of people who try to buy from a scam and give up. What a shame.

First I ask the person that I am trying to convert what it is they like about smoking. The taste, throat hit etc. Once I get an idea of what it is that they enjoy about smoking I will try to match them up with an ecig that has the characteristics that they enjoy.

For one person, I gave them a DSE 901 kit as a house warming gift and showed them how to use and care for it. For my cousin, while she was visiting I gave her my kissbox extended to use while she was in town. She liked it so much that I gave it to her as a gift when she left. She has totally quit smoking!

It's not quitting smoking. It's changing to a much cheaper, much better tasting brand.
When I'm going to be around a friend that smokes (surprisingly few) I bring an extra 510 cart and nicostick. I always have a few atomizers/carts/bottles of different flavors. If they want to try it, I put a couple drops in the atty and put a clean empty cart on. If they find a flavor they like I fill up their cart, show them how, and hand them my travel bottle.
If they have any questions, I answer them. Beyond that, it's up to them.

really great advice from everyone here. My dad actually let me ty my first ecig. I'd heard of them but hadn't thought much of it. Then my dad let me try his. It wasn't GREAT, but got me thinking. He over spent, but likes it for indoor usage (my mom is either allergic to second hand smoke or really good at faking it). I did some resurch and got my kits. After I got 'em I became a convert and wanted to convert EVERYONE I knew. Instead. I use it around smokers (have switched 2 over so far) and carry some buisness cards with info on them. I Told my husband I liked 'em but I knew better then to "tell" him to use them. Instead I told him about vaping indoors, loving the tastes of juices and being nonchalant. He HAD to try it. He's now a convert too.
