whats the downside to using cotton in existing protank coil??

Everywhere I look I see that people are constantly making their own coils for using a cotton wick in the protank, what I have not seen is why nobody uses an existing protank coil with their cotton. I am being kind of inpatient and I want to try it out since my kanthal has not come in the mail yet, but I figured I would ask why it is I have not seen this done yet, on these lovely forums first.

My only goal with doing this today will be to try and understand better how the cotton expands and can become "choked off" by the wire being too tight.

I think you can if you manage to remove the silica without breaking the coil.

Another thing to mention, I only saw people rebuilding the coil on the PT as a microcoil. I don't know how normal coil vs micro coil will go with the cotton. One issue that you might encounter is that the normal coil will not vaporize fast enough and you will get a bit of flood. The cotton wicks really really well.

I do it all the time after I have used the coils awhile and they start to taste bad I soak in hot water let dry and then with tweezers slowly pull out the old wic try to do it in slivers not the whole chunk. Then dry burn it blow off any ash left over. Ok then get organic cotton sometimes I boil it and let it dry. Then when dry pull off a little piece and roll it so it's the size of the wick make one end very narrow to thread it thru this will be a little frustrating till you get the hang of the size it needs to be. So slide it thru it can be a little loose it will expand when the juice soaks in. Now I add a drop of juice to the wick and coil you don't want to burn the cotton dry you won't be happy or just reassemble and lay the wick soak a bit before you hit it. Good luck tastes great great vapor and less leaking.

It's just easier to build your own coil than to try to remove the wick from the pre-built coil. Plus, the microcoil makes it a lot simpler to pull a cotton wick through. It's an even, straight shot through since all the wraps of the coil are touching. You don't get parts of the wick stuck through the separate wraps.

Thanks for all the responses! So after reading NiNi's reply I tried it out, and the 4th time I got the cotton the right size :)

After that I went to the mailbox to find my kanthal had arrived! I used the 30ga, and attempted my first coul, which came out to be 3ohm (I tested it after complete assemly and trimming of wire). I took it apart again and the second time I made a 2.5ohm coil! I used a similar size piece of cotton that worked earlier with the factory coil and juiced it up!

The first draw on it had gurgling (3.5v), the second (3.8v) draw though, was overwhelming!!! I thought cotton was supposed to give better flavor (Oh how it did!), but I didnt expect more vapor and a nicotine buzz.... is that common?
