so im new to vaping and just got a PV that uses cartomizers

how do you know when you need to rejuice the thing or if you need to top up? I read that once you get a burnt kinda taste you should be refilling but given that im completely new to this a "burnt" taste is kinda vague, im not sure I can tell the difference between that and a normal vape

is there any way to check when the juice is running too low in the cart?

Just a quick point: a cart goes in an atomizer and a cartomizer is one piece that is a cartridge and atomizer (hence the name)

But, it is an experience thing. When I was new, I had no idea when it was running low until it was too late. You'll learn.

Good idea to have plenty of spares around, or at least have them coming in.

(If I have less than 5 spares, I get nervous and I should have been doing this long enough to know what I'm doing...)

You'll know when you get to the burnt taste but before you get there you'll experience a loss of flavor and probably vapor also, once you get to the point you can tell the flavor is dropping off then top it off, better to be safe than sorry and once the burnt taste gets in a atty or carto it can be hard to get rid of.

what are the signs of it being too late? :p

I have plenty of juice lying around, I just dont want to refill until I know for sure that Im out because I dont want to mix up the flavours

For me it was with attys and carts. I would melt the cart and that taste just never comes out of the atty. And makes it hard to get the cart out.

(I draw longer than normal. While I'm closer to a normal length of draw now, I used to suck on my PV like it was my only source of oxygen. I'm feeling much better now...)

One of the things you can do is pull the cart off, if it looks dry, take your tweezers and turn the filler around to the wet side. Vape that, then switch flavors. I have heard tapping the LED end on your leg will help the filler move the e-liquid to the top.
When your vapor becomes less noticeable is usually a good indicator. The flavor starts to drop off, is another.
