Hop on over to the liquor store and ask for some Everclear.

As long as your state hasn't banned sales. Like Ohio.

What I don't get is that you can't legally buy it if you're under 21, but they ban it so kids don't get alcohol poisoning.

Because drinking two shots of Wild Turkey 101 is soooooooooo hard to do.

If just for cleaning, why not use Isopropyl Alcohol AKA Rubbing Alcohol? (no you cant drink it)

It can be found in any drug store in the 1st aid section. 90% or higher cleans things perfect, and makes a good soak for silica, pyrex, quartz, and metal.

If soaking plastics I would stick with the cheap 50% vodka.... just to play it safe.

I did that at first, left a nasty aftertaste. Everclear or cheap vodka only now. I use whiskey to get rid of menthols or mints, kills 'em dead!!

97 proof or higher alcohol works all the same and is cheaper than most solutions mentioned.

The issue for some is that the denatured alcohol uses petroleum by products that are intended to make it taste bad, damage the body and leave a film, that's why they don't get a liquor tax. (not ideal for most who are trying to reduce the harm in their life). Really who doesn't have a spare ounce or Two of Vodka.

That is why you only buy the Isopropyl Alcohol, from the first aid section of a drug store, it is clear.. and only other ingrediant in it is purified water. Isopropyl has the great property of disolving oils, alkolids and resins... which means it will knock off just about any gunk a tank would come in contact with. You can find this in strengths from 70% to 99% at drug stores... myself I would recommend anything 90% or higher for your soaking needs. It is a clear liquid.

Dont soak most plastics or gaskets in it, but for everythign else it will work great.

"denatured alcohol" has mentholated components to it, and does leave a residue and is sometimes cut with petrol chemicals, but it is also often colored purple or green so you can easily identifiy it.

Anyways, no matter what you soak with... vodka, isopropyl, denture tabs... what ever.. you should still give every thing a quick rinse afterwards with some distilled water. Even a mild one with distilled water in a spray bottle will do the trick.
