What is the cartridge white fill called and where can it be had in a quantity appropriate to this use for a good price? Brick and mortar store/chain and internet sources with cheap shipping? After mine has had it I would like to cut my own and replace the old. Thanks!

Most of us have found that other materials work better than what comes in the original cartridges. I bought a huge bag of polyfil pillow stuffing (don't get the fire safe one) from Walmart for $3 and I used that for a long time before buying some Fluval aquarium filter material at a pet store. (If you go with the Fluval, rinse it well before using) It only takes a tiny bit of either one to fill your cart and it can be rinsed and reused a few times before you need to replace it. I use either one with the straw mod and I have tried to find a link here to it but no luck. Basically you cut a piece of coffee stirer type straw so that it fits in the cart about an 1/8 inch below the lip. Cut a V in the bottom of it and insert it into your cart with the filler. This is easy if you use tweezers. I believe there is a video on youtube of how to do this.

Hi siouxsie, I also use aquarium foam, but it is by Aquaclear.
Hagen AquaClear Foam Filter Inserts at PETCO
A block of foam costs less than $2 and will last a long time, mainly because it needs less replacing and maintenance than the stock fluval filler, which BTW works terribly. Some use MarineLand Blue Foam. The aquarium filter foams are all similar in material, but vary in color. If you have a PETCO nearby, they will likely carry either foams or both.
Getting rid of the fluval will improve your PV a lot! Fluval wicks poorly, holds on to juice too well, and gets compressed by the atty bridge quite easily. The foam holds up much better, wicks far better, and is less prone to burning from the hot bridge. You cut a long box-shape slightly wider then the cart, insert it, and cut off flush with the top of the cart. Add juice by dripping into it. You can also use a "vent straw" with it if you like. There are other cart mods that use the foam too.

I burnt out of using 510 equipment for a very long time due to the filler...the aquarium foam really works for me when I am using carts and not dripping.
