well, i found a workaround for ie8, but still annoying!
if the page i'm trying to load is in compatibility mode then i need to bump that off, and vice versa
at least i will be able to get on more reliably if necessary but definitely not a longterm solution

Tibs, have you tried clearing your Internet Exploder cache, or running it in "safe mode"? Have you tried a different browser, like Chrome? Are you using wireless? Are other sites slow too? Do you have a lot of toolbars? Bing and Yahoo toolbars will bog down your browsing considerably.

Hi Jan, Mary and Lis.
Tibs mentioned IE8... and since IE8 is a fat pig, and puts the "slow" in internet, I thought maybe a more nimble browser might be worth a shot.
