Tibs, have you tried clearing your Internet Exploder cache, or running it in "safe mode"? Have you tried a different browser, like Chrome? Are you using wireless? Are other sites slow too? Do you have a lot of toolbars? Bing and Yahoo toolbars will bog down your browsing considerably.
i obtained chrome in desparation, i cleared everything, no additional toolbars, nothing helped
i'm getting online through a data card, all was well until 3 days ago
found a workaround, please check post in snails
can get on now but very cumbersome
Did you try checking and /or disabling your firewall and antivirus programs? Wondering if something there is blocking websites from loading.

I posted the hosts file trick we used for you over on the snails thread for her. It could be that one of those external sites is the problem also. That facebook connector and google stuff really drags down the page loading.
Now I really should get back to work.
