Just learned something... it almost always happens when I'm on vacation - as you know it is celebrated in Hawaii quite extensively.. and in WDW we go to the China pavillion/area on that day.... so we missed it this year.... but - looked it up:

Chinese New Year begins according to the Chinese calendar which consists of both Gregorian and lunar-solar calendar systems. Because the track of the new moon changes from year to year, Chinese New Year can begin anytime between late January and mid-February.

China was an agrarian society for thousands of years and lunar and seasonal cycles were important, thus the lunar calendar.

Hawaii has a large Asian population, especially the Japanese. Its culture is a melting pot of sorts with influences from Portuguese (ukelele and saugauges) to Polynesian.

Lis, they celebrate everything in Hawaii, 20 some holidays but you don't always get off work.

Well, you must have had a good reason to leave Hawaii, Jag. Maybe it was because of the peacock. :D

They were good reasons at the time, hard to travel anywhere (not that I do), expensive, BIG bugs. In retrospect, I'm not sure why I moved. But I may move back one day, who knows!!!

More recently, the Japanese came in big time in Maui (and Rockefeller Center :)) all through the 80's and part of the 90's and when the Japanese economy fell out of bed, there was actually a decrease in the real estate prices in Maui for the first time. Lots of Filipino workers in Maui too, and I'm guessing the other islands as well.

Always fireworks in Lahaina during the Chinese New Year and always fun.

The Japanese has had a long presence in Hawaii. It is the third largest ethnic group there behind mixed (don't know PC term) and Caucasian.

You're right. Housing prices crashed early 90's with the collapse of the Japanese economy. They were still low by 2000 and that's when I bought a place there. Island real estate prices are usually 2 years behind mainland, USA. By 2005, home prices went crazy there too.
