The odds are terrible. When New York joined MegaMillion, there was an article discussing the probability of winning. The one that stuck with me was —— If you know only one person in Canada and they put the name of everyone in Canada on little slips of paper and put them in a hat, you'd have a better chance of pulling your friend's name than of winning the jackpot on a $1 bet.

I'm not going to buck odds like that unless the potential reward is BIG!

Jane, the odds of winning the big prize in Powerball are 1 in 146,107,962. I stopped buying Powerball when it went up to $2 a ticket and switched to MegaMillions, which is still $1.

I prefer Mega too. I buy that if the jackpot is over $50. Powerball if it's over $100 million.
