But to the original question...it depends on the device and your personal preferences. I've seen many people tout the pros and cons of each and I think the answer is subjective.

I have not tried ceramic but between silica and SS I would say SS. But it depends on what it's in. Silica (or cotton) works best in rebuildable dripping atomizers (although I've seen folks use SS effectively as well) and SS works best in RBAs (but I've used silica effectively as well). Some people (myself included) have had good success with hybrids (silica wrapped in SS) in their RBAs. I've seen SS in a Protank (that couldn't have been easy...lol). Some people don't like the taste of SS and some don't like silica. You may just want to experiment and see what works for you.

Sooooo...to answer the original question....cotton.

It really depends on what device you are using. Silica is that standard, stainless works well in Genesis type tanks and drip tanks. The fairly new stuff is the ceramic which I have really only seen used in the Genesis type tanks.

there are many variables when you get to this side of the vaping journey, juice mixes, devices, wicks, attys will all work somewhat differntly with each other. The only way to know what works best for you is to do it all yourself.

this is currently where i am, trying to figure out what to try and accomplish next, i'm thinkin rba's and dripping attys are my next step.

There really is no general concensus as to which is the best, you just have to figure out what works for your particular setup.

as of now, just rebuilding my protank coils, silica works great for me, great flavor, great vapor.

This. Cotton absorbs sooo much. Lately I've been going back and forth with silica, and cotton, silica wins with flavor. Just my opinion. I use a RSST for tank, and IGO-L for drip.

I've only tried SS and Silica. Love them both! The SS wick in my genesis set ups takes me a few minutes to set up but the wick seems to last forever. Just wrap some wire around it a few times a month and you are set for a while. Silica wicks, to me, hold onto flavors well and I use them for my lighter juices - fruit, candy etc. If you use both, you are still good to go even if you run short on mesh or silica.

It's all personal preference but I think that everyone should try rebuilding a few different ways. It's just too much fun to tinker w/ vape toys to settle for just 1

From my experiences, silica is good until it gunks up, but is easy to use.
SS mesh is tricky to set up but is amazing when done right and the wick lasts a long time. As nasty as it can get you can just take it out, burn it off, recoil it and it's good as new.
My z-atty pro came with a porous ceramic wick preinstalled and I wasn't impressed. It's tricky to get the coils to wrap tight against the wick, especially with the grooves the FC2000 has now. Even when I got a tight coil and let it break in, the vapor and flavor just wasn't where I wanted it. I never tried wrapping it in cotton, but I still have some FC2000s left over to experiment with later. That said, ceramics are still evolving and I'm sure I'll be coming back around to them in the future.

    Again, just my experiences.
