I believe, from what I have read, he was the guy who came out with the ruyan. Now, I don't remember if his name is ruyan or not, I'm not even sure if I spelled it right! I think he developed it because a family member died of lung issues from smoking. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but when I started researching the e-cigarette, that was the story I read, and remember (either could be false, age gets you in more ways than 1!!).

Amazing. Thanks Sicarius and all. Wow the e-cig is older than me!

This bit stands out from the_maiden's article link about Gilbert:

"His electronic cigarette had the potential to knock the profits of big tobacco on their butts and his fuel extender would have done anything but extend the profits of big oil. With two such large industries against him, is it any wonder that neither was a commercial success?"

Reminds me of the movie 'The Insider' *shudder*

Anyone know if Gilbert died of natural causes ... or was he assassinated? *conspiracy mode*

Trivia about Herbert A. Gilbert
found in the Titusville Herald - July 29, 1967:

BEAVER FALLS Pa. (AP)—
If you're chewing gum, biting your fingernails or twitching with the nervousness that comes with trying to quit smoking, Herbert A Gilbert says, "He can help."

I call it "'Smokeless'" said Gilbert, displaying Friday a metal cylinder about as round as a lipstick and a little longer. It comes in 10 flavors—mint, licorice, fruit, brandy, cinnamon, citrus, orange, lemon, clove, and rum. And when you light one up there aren't any ashes.

"Cinnamon is my favorite", said Gilbert, who dropped from a three-pack-a-day smoker to an occasional cigarette after lighting his first Smokeless six months ago.

A 'Smokeless', according to Gilbert, has a combustion chamber at one end which contains a flavored pellet.

"It's a flavor product directly off the supermarket shelf and harmless too", he said. The smoker ignites the pellet and inhales moist heated and flavored air. Eliminated are the cigarette bugaboos of tar, nicotine and smoke.

"It's not going to replace the cigarette", says Gilbert, "but it will fill the vacuum that now exists between smoking and abstinence. That was our original idea."

Gilbert, the Vice President of the Gilbert Iron and Steel Co in Beaver Falls said the device could be used as a vaporizer for heated medication and by people who want to lose weight.

"They can go ahead and smoke their favorite food," he said, "I could smoke soup in it—the possibilities are endless."

Gilbert said several firms are interested in the product unveiled at a news conference, and that he is trying to interest the American Cancer Society.

A woman reporter who lit up a 'Smokeless' didn't share Gilberts enthusiasm.

" If there were a whole a whole room of these it would be terrible," she said, "It would smell just like a candy store."
