Why 801 and 901 for mods?

It seems that almost all mods (including the "commercial" ones, SD, LV, etc) use either 801 or 901 atomizers. Is this because they are the most common or are they considered the best atomizers?
I just started and the 401 is the only ecig that I have experience with, just wondering if I should be considering building mods that use other atomizers.

Thanks
John

I use 510 and 901 because they are my favorite atomizers so far. I have an 801 that I am not fond of and an RN4062 cigar that I really don't like. My personal favorite is the 510, but I haven't found a no-battery-sacrifice alternative connector for it yet, so I don't use it for prototyping any mods. I prototype with the 901 because I like the atomizer and I can buy a part at the local electronic parts store to use for connecting the atomizer. Others really like the 801, so thy use that. Not many stick with the RN4081 long enough to get modding, so it doesn't get used much for this. The 401 has gained popularity in the last 6 months, so we may be seeing more 401 mods as more of its users get the modding bug.

The vapor from the 901 just feels better to me. When I use the 801, the vapor seems to condense in my throat and on the back of my tongue and cause this strange tickle that makes me cough. It is not the nicotine tingle/burn feeling. It is more like a postnasal drip feeling, where you can resist the urge to cough, but not forever. The 901 feels warmer, fuller, more like an analog. The 510 feels just like a 901 on factory batteries. On a mod, the 510 beats the 901 hands down. This is all very subjective. There are many here who prefer the 801.

Sounds like we should step up the search for a way to connect up 501 attys; the general feedback being so positive :)

I shall have to get one before I can be of any help ...

That's an elegant description. Thank you. I was wondering if your preference was based on mechanical factors or perception of performance.

Just based on which agrees more with me. I have seen rave reviews on things I despised and horrid reviews on my precious yeti. It is all in the throat of the vaper so to speak.
