Silly question, but it's always bothered me that I don't fully know the meaning of some of the lingo.

"mod" implies to me 'modification'. Is that it? They are "modifiable"? "Modified"?

...mostly this question is just an excuse to get obligatory post 2 of 5 out of the way to become a real person on the forum. Still interested in the answer, of course...

Yep, at the beginning they were modifications of existing devices, such as flashlights. If you Google Screwdriver mod, then you can see one of the first ones. I believe they're on the Mark III now.

Ahhh the screwdriver, I loved that thing with a good 901 atty. Dont know where the hell that thing went but I still have my Silver Bullet from the first run in '09 still sitting here on my desk. I remember when the Screwdriver and the Silver Bullet were the best things since sliced bread and now they are almost prehistoric. Still amazed at how much and how fast this industry has grown, overall just awesome!

Stosh hit the nail on the head with his answer :)

Those of us who have been around a few years were using that vernacular before other terms (like APV, etc) were even thought up, so it just comes naturally to many to use it and, as a result, they have used it around newer vapers enough that the term is still firmly entrenched in the day to day vocabulary. I suspect the term "mod" will live on for quite some time just for this reason

Great question. Pretty sure it would be the #1 asked question in the book, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Vaping, But Was Afraid to Ask".

I love it! Now I can tell wife when she asked me WHY DO YOU NEED ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE THINGS? Honey it's a new flashlight!!!

Wow a convert able flashlight. Glad to know where the roots of mod came from thanks

Used to be an option made for a screw in 510 connector with a led light.
You could take a manufactured "mod" and turn it back into a flashlight...

Using the term Mod to refer to commercial devices has always bothered me. A Mod was a personal creation you saw developed from scratch in the modder's forum to address a need or desire. All of the technology we have today started there.
The APV, Mod designations came to commercial devices when the venting requirements were put in place to address exploding batteries, etc.
The evolution of the ecig has been pretty amazing.
I've always wished the forum would make a chronological gallery of the innovations that came form there. And maybe a hall of fame.

I remember that. I can't remember who the modder was that put an LED in his Nicostick so he could see when filling his cart!

I apparently really need to learn the "vaping lingo". I feel like I'm trying to read a different language!

The forum used to have a "hover function" linked to a glossary of terms for abbreviations and acronyms. I was away for awhile and it seems to have disappeared. I could use it too with all the changes and abbreviations used.
