Why can't I get over 20 watts with a 0.5 SS316 coil?

Hi guys,

New to vaping. I just got a smok r200 and a Kanger Toptank, and posted a thread about having trouble getting good hits with the Kanger ni200 coil. I decided to save that problem for another day, and pop in the 0.5 SS316 that came with the Toptank. I'm getting small/decent hits with no off flavor in wattage mode, but if I try to get up to even 25watts the vapor starts getting a bit harsh and I'm losing flavor. The coil states an operable range of 15w - 60w, and I get the feeling that most people vape at higher wattages than 20 with even this type of coil, so am I doing something wrong, or is that just how the coil is? Thanks for your help

I'm pretty sure it is the Stainless Steel; it's the one with the pink ring. And it is in SS mode

You got a nice deal then! I've never seen a pink SSOCC in real life and certainly not one bundled in the package. :)
Anyway.... we need to be talking about the temperature setting if it's TC not the watts. If you set the watts to 25 or 30, nothing very impressive will happen.
What temperature are you setting it to?

I would set a new (unknown to me) coils to at least 40w and at least 450 degrees F.
But, I'm not a TC expert. Actually, I am not a fan at all.

Or, what happens if you use it in plain watts mode and really push it?
Forgive me, I'm not in the know on these coils but if the range is that wide it might not work at either end. These ranges are often guesswork (or to give impressive claims by the manufacturer).
On balance maybe I'd start my experiments in watts. Slowly work up but keep that coil wet! Plenty of pulling without firing the coil. :)

SSOCC coils doesnt mesn tge coil is Stainless Steel. It means tge coil head is made of Stainless Steel.

About tge harsh vape. Kanger has or had quality Control issues with tge wicking.

Sone coil heads has too little cotton. This cayses pops spitting and leaking.

A few coils are Wicked perfectly.

A LOT of tge coils have too much cotton crammed in there and they don't wick properly.

The inconsistent coil heads is what caused me to start rebuilding.

I think you have a coil there with wicking issues and you are scorching or burning the Cotton.

Just out of curiosity, being that so few people have heard/seen SS316 coils coming with those kits, have you checked your authenticity sticker? It may just be a new thing Kanger is doing but worth checking.

With the newer coils, I've had no trouble pushing the wattage personally. Usually around 45W with the .5 claptons seems light... 55-60ish for sweet spot and the ni200s work well too (for my style, anyway) so something seems off here, to me.

AFAIK the only coil that can be used in TC is the NI 200.
The rest are kanthal coils. They
will/should kick you back into wattage mode if the device is set to TC.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Kanger makes stainless steel wire SSOCC coils (the pink ones, as mentioned above) that should be able to be used in temperature control. Vapor Authority has them in stock. I usually use them at around 20-22 watts, and have also been unable to go above that.

From the Vapor Authority Website

Kanger has made SSOCC Coils that do actually use 316L Stainless Steel wires. The SUS316 SSOCC Coils, as they are called, are available in 0.5 ohms resistance. The stainless steel coils, which are etched with the letters “SS” on the casing, can be easily distinguished by its pink seals. The Stainless Steel SSOCC Coils are for use with temperature control devices in TC mode.

I have never used the SUS316 SSOCC coils so I can't say for sure but it sounds like a wicking issue to me. I have never been very satisfied with any Kanger coils. Although the .5 Clapton was decent at about 40 watts. Too much inconsistency, IMHO. I have a couple of SubTank Minis & use the RBA decks exclusively.

Thanks! That's reassuring that I'm not doing anything majorly wrong. How is the flavor production with your coil? I'm not getting harsh hits and getting an okay amount of vapor production, but I'm not exactly getting *strong* flavor. If everything else is okay, it's probably just my juice.

Hey guys, just to reply to everyone that's talking about TC, I've actually been using this coil in power mode. Would TC be better for this coil? They're marketed as being able to be used for both.
Yes, I thought this and then posted another comment the next post.
Personally I think TC just confuses the issue for the new user.
@Is2erin makes in interesting point though.

Update: I tried it in TC mode, and again I'm a little confused. I'm finding that 250F is about as high as I can get without off flavor, but most people seem to be vaping at at least 400F. I'm getting decent flavor and decent hits so there isn't exactly a problem, I'm just not sure why my temps would be so different than most everyone elses. Thoughts?
