Why do I need a Drip Sheild?

What is a drip shield and why do I need it?

There is only one atomizer that I have used a few times -
the 2ohm dual coil from COV w/ the 'cheater' pump cart from Gotvapes.
The DC from COV really pumps some vape on my Ken's Big Daddy VV.
So I'm thinking about this:

Nice explanations (and illustration) there. I knew what it was intended to do, but I had no idea how a drip shield actually functioned before reading that. Thanks!
