When I was a smoker i noticed the same things as i notice now. I never threw my butts on the ground or out of the car window. When i was where there was no ashtrays I put my butts in a altoid tin and disposed of them when i passed a trash can. So why do people litter and not care?

I don't mind being around smokers except i hate the littering! I want to say something but don't know what to say now that i vape. When i smoked i just showed them by using my altoid tin and hoped they would get one!

I always field dressed my butts. What aggravated me more than anything was watching someone toss a .... on the ground two feet from an ash can. I assure you, the culprits never did it more than once (at least in my presence).

I had to google the first part :) what did you do/say to make them not throw their butts on the ground?

In civilian mode I'd say something like, "You're two feet from a .... can...why in the world would you just throw that on the ground? Pick it up and try again."

In Marine mode I said the same thing only with different words and inflection.

Even jumped on my Dad once when he tossed a .... in my newly purchased lawn (love ya Dad...ya big ....-head).

I don't get to do it as often as I don't hang around in those circles (I used to go out with the smokers but the smell just lingered on my clothes afterward...can't do it anymore).

Birds of the corvid variety will become addicted to tobacco. Next time you see a crow eating a cigarette you'll know why. No joke. I always put mine in the ashtray. If there was no ashtray or can...then I'd make one. Also, I would keep water in my .... can. Caught some teenagers trying to pillage the ashtray, last year. So I kept it full of water :)

I call BS on anyone who claims to have smoked for any decent amount of time and NEVER - not once, not one.single.time - disposed of their cigarette butts improperly. I hate littering just like the next average guy, but I'm not going to sit here and pretend like I was the poster-child of ....-disposal perfection for 25 years.

This just goes to show what I've always said, no one on the planet despises smokers (and their habits) more than some ex-smokers.

Well sure I put them out on the ground. Started smoking when I was 12, and kids don't really care about that kind of stuff. When I got older I cared. Never threw them out the window. Didn't want to be a d bag that started a fire. The older smokers in the family drilled that into my brain.

A lot of smokers do it out of habit. It takes a change of habit to reverse it. Littering tickets from State Troopers tend to help change the habit. Ohio State Troopers will issue you a littering ticket if they see you flick butts out the window.

As far as cigarettes starting brushfires, chances are those fires are going to start no matter how many people you try to reform. Campfires, arson, fireworks, and lightning are the other main cause of brushfires.

And some Texas troopers might do some .... flicking themselves if they catch you doing it ;)

I won't say that I have never thrown cig butts on the groynd or out of the window because I have. But the link I posted was meant to be humorous. I saw it posted on another forum I am on.
I don't have to worry about it any longer as I will never pick up another analog.
