Why do you temp control?

That is the question.

Why do YOU temp control, and what temp do you like it?

I don't see the value for the way that I vape. I like it warm-to-hot and 400-430 just doesn't cut it. I could run it higher, but then I get into dry hit territory with cotton and IMO I might as well use kanthal. My goto coil right now is a single 32AWG/Twisted 24AWG Clapton.

I'm curious to see what other like about it.

Yesterday I was vaping at 574F which is the max setting on my SXML but I normally vape at around 470F. It is all about the wicking and using Rayon can help with that. TC gives you a steady heat but it doesn't have to be cool. It is whatever you set it at and feel comfortable. I normally use 24ga Ti but sometimes twist up various combinations of different wire types to change things up a bit.

Right, but if you are running temps that can burn the cotton why not just use kanthal. I assume for "consistency" of flavor, but I don't really have an issue controlling that as is.

You won't burn your cotton unless you vape it completely bone dry. The cotton burn test you are thinking about is for dry cotton (not damp or moist). Long before your cotton is bone dry, you will know the tank is empty by diminished vapor and taste. As others have also stated, the main reason I use TC is for the consistency of the vape.

Cheers,
Steve

If you like warmer/hotter vapes you might consider Silica rope - it ain't going to burn or discolor at ANY vaping temperature. ;)

I came from toodle puffing factory tanks/coils which might of worked for a few hours, days or not at all.

I use TC for consistency. Once everything is setup well each draw/drag/pull is the same start to finish until the tank runs dry (or the battery(s) deplete).

While I run most of my stuff at meager 380-460F with < 40W (usually <20) and generally enjoy a cooler vape there are others that like the over 500F with much much higher power. (its doubtful any of my builds would function well at the higher end)

    For me, TC:
    • Extends the useful life of my coil/wicks
    • Lets me forget about having to refill before empty
    • Prevents any possibility of overheating juice
    • Prevents dry hits
    • Lets me sneak up on a juice's 'sweet spot', and once this is found I can get the same taste during a short, medium or looong draw.
    • Once dialed in, it gives me the best overall vape experience I have had to date
    For coils/wicks, I:
    • Use slightly spaced coils
    • Use single coils
    • Use higher resistance coils than some- Ni200 ~0.12 ohm, SS314L ~ 0.4 to 0.5 ohm, both types of wire are 28 gauge and 2.5 to 3mm ID coil
    • Use rayon exclusively
    For mod settings, I:
    • Use temps between 400 and 500 deg. F
    • Adjust the initial resistance first, then adjust the TCR if needed
    • Tend to stay below ~30 watts on mods that have wattage settings. The wattage settings seem to only affect the ramp-up. Mods w/o wattage (like the Treebox) use a "Soft, Norm or Hard" setting for ramp-up

Ya good point. I do like TC but you caught me fibbing I guess. I'm not sure if TC could be said to be "better", but I think I am getting really good flavor in TC.

I am certainly not a fan of NI200 anymore though. I like TI and am looking forward to SS wire (I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet.)

As always Vape Happy, and Vape Safe. :D

If you can use technology to control some additional variables of your vape, limit the production of harmful chemicals and tweak for a flavor zone as well as your build's wicking rate, why not? It seems to be a no-brainer that if you vape, you will want to vape TC. TC is to regulated as regulated is to mechanical...it is part of the evolution of how we do this as an alternative to cigarettes etc.

I have one build that has two months of usage on it and has been vaped bone dry four times (about 600 ml of juice through it). It is still in perfect shape.

Not sure I can say I use TC since I am just venturing into trying it. And I don't build, so comments are limited to factory coils. So.........

The only thing I do know, is the trial period is going to stretch out for quite a while. Multiple tanks with multiple coils for each with tons of varying flavors. And when I try a new coil in a tank, I can't bring myself to change it out unless it is virtually unvapeable. At my age, this could last a lifetime.

I'm testing this out with an IPV D2 and Lavabox DNA200. Seems there is enough difference that after a bit of testing, I am now sticking with the Lavabox.

The first try was the Ni200 coil in an Atlantis v1. After a few coils, several flavors, and fiddling with settings, I've decided to eliminate TC on those tanks.

At the same time, I tried Ni200 coils on the Kanger Sub mini. While I had a few flavors that just didn't seem to hold up well, others have worked kinda nice. I have stayed with a Huckleberry Ice Cream flavor at about 460° on 28W. As of now, I could see staying with using the mini running Ni200 coils.

For a while, I have been trying the Herakles Plus with the SS coil, but have only used I Love Donuts juice in it. That is working rather nice at 480° on 40W. I'm running out of that juice, so want to finish it off before changing flavors in the tank. Although the jury may still be out on this set-up, it was good enough that I got 5 more SS coils to continue the testing. Looks promising.

And finally, I just started using a titanium coil in a TFV4 mini. I probably made a bit of a mistake by starting out with a new flavor since I won a 120ml bottle of Cuttwood Boss Reserve and couldn't wait to try it. So far, I've dialed it in at 540° and 68W. I was surprised at ramping up that much higher, but have to say it is not only the best TC vape so far, it matches or exceeds any other set-up I use. It will be hard to put this one down, so will wait until I need to change coils (yes, I will be picking up a 5 pack of these) before trying another flavor. Hands down, my best TC vape.

Sorry for being a bit long-winded, but curious if others have similar or differing experiences.

You touched on quite a few things there. I 100% agree with sticking with the DNA200 for TC. I have 4 different DNA200's and I think they are arguably the best TC chip out there (I'm sure some will argue the SX350J chip is as good or better - hence the arguably lol).

One other thing I'm in total agreement with you on is not all attys are created equal when it comes to TC. You want a tank with very stable resistance. One that the resistance jumps around on will kill your TC experience.

Since I only use RTA's (build my own coils) and DIY my juice, I can't comment on the rest of your findings. I normally run my Billow V2's and Bellus at 420-450F depending on juice (I like a cooler vape) and 25-50 watts depending on coil material and size (more metal takes more power to heat it up). I usually have my preheat set at ~80 watts for 1 second, with punch set at 5 for 1 second. I've been experimenting with turning the preheat down to 1 watt, 1 punch, for 1 second with my 430 SS though (getting very good results I might add). Happy Vaping!

    Cheers,
    Steve

I recently switched to stainless wire so I can fire the same atomizer and build on power or temp control and I've done both a few times. Temp control wins. What ever watts I choose there is some temperature below 600 I don't want to exceed so why not be able to set that? I can vape with power control if necessary but I prefer the consistancy of TC.

I love to abuse TC to get the vape I enjoy. Tootle puffing with TI I will vape at 500F. If I want a fog machine I will use twisted Nife52 or SS, jack up the TCR, still leave the temp at 500F and adjust to preference with wattage/power with the full understanding the displayed temp is not accurate. Only time it ever hits temp and throttles is when the wick is getting dry.

    For me, TC=VC. (Vape control!)
