Below is a slightly edited version of a blog-post I distributed to my friends in the hope of making them quit as well. I have deleted the stuff you all probably already know ;)

-----------------------

I thought I’d share with you my experiences with e-smokes, coz the general impression that I have taken away from it is really awesome. It all started one morning on just another normal day waking up and realizing that the first thing I want to do is light up a cigarette. For yet another time I was confronted with a habit I just did not really want anymore, but I also realized that I’ll lose this battle anyway… there was no hope. Recently it had become somewhat easier to smoke LESS, yes, but to stop altogether… this remained an elusive target. Interestingly, the main cause of me becoming more and more hostile to smoking was to be found in the books I read on behavioral psychology and irrationality. I started to realize the mechanisms that were the cause of me not being able to drop it, and also started to come up with ideas on how to “trick” myself into quitting.

The trick worked on Coke. I stopped drinking it in huge (2-3.5L a day) quantities about 4 months ago, by “paraphrasing” a trick from one of the books I read – I replaced the red coke cans with red Spa cans containing sparkling water. It may seem silly, but it worked. I still got to drink from a red can, only this time without sugar. Two weeks later I had kicked my Coke habit, and felt much better for it. Although for a time I have started to drink other sugar drinks like Ice-tea, I did eventually end up with simple sparking water. Now I have makybe one Coke a day, if that.

Anyway, smoking. I realized I would need to do something similar. I still had to have my hand-to-mouth action, I still wanted to make smoke, I still needed something to suck on. Spare me the Freud, please ;)

Enter the e-cigarette. I ordered two versions – one el-cheapo cigarette lookalikes, one more advanced with a liquid container. Two days later the first ones arrived… immediately my “analogue” cigarette consumption dropped by 75% to just 4 smokes a day. The next day, same, the day after only two, and then… nothing. This was almost three weeks ago – I am still smoke-free. The urge to smoke cigarettes is all but gone. And yes, in case you’re wondering – in the meantime I had two parties, with people smoking “the real deal” and even then managed to hold my ground. Even after a solid 500ml of True Polish Vodka a real smoke did not enter the picture. So it worked!!

Now…

Why is it so awesome?? Well… because it is the perfect replacement. You don’t need to change much about your habits; it is designed to be as similar to smoking as possible. However, it comes with a distinct list of advantages to real cigarettes that, well, make the old-skool smokes something really archaic. Let me list them for you in no particular order:

1) Nothing actually BURNS. It only produces water vapor with a flavor
You still get to enjoy making sa nice cloud of smoke, and it feels very much like a true smoking experience. Admittedly, when outdoors, the water vapor is a bit "thin", but that is a minor inconvenience. Overall the experience and the amount of smoke is near identical. No second hand smoke, no children being poisoned, nothing of the sort!

2) You get to pick your own flavor
I now have a new addiction to Hazelnut flavor and Vanilla ;) Especially the hazelnut is absolutely delicious and NO CIGARETTE COMES CLOSE! Yummm! It's like smoking a high-quality German nut-cake. Also got English Tea and Mint and it does really indeed taste like you're smoking a jar of tea, I .... you not.

3) You don't get cancer from it, it contains 2-3 orders of magnitude less damaging chemicals than real cigarettes.
And now this is where it gets interesting. It is BEYOND OBVIOUS that e-smokes are several orders of magnitude healthier than real smokes, yet health-organizations worldwide are struggling to come to terms with it. Read up about it if you want - I am not the conspiracy type of guy, but the way this is handled by them is HIGHLY dubious, to say the least. Bans, restrictions, re-classifications as medical devices, labeling nicotine a drug, mentioning "but what about the children!" - you name it, it has all been done.

4) You can "smoke" in the house. And in the shops, and on the plane, and… anywhere!
This is still a little odd... at home, it's totally cool, but when I like go to a shopping center and puff away on my mini-water-cooker (coz that's what it really ultimately is) people give me weird looks and feel an urge to comment sometimes... but it's fully legal. I still don’t smoke it in restaurants though, I am guessing it would make people feel uncomfortable just by the visual association. But, legally, I am in fact entitled to it (unless the owner of the establishment has a problem with it, but this would be PERSONAL, not LEGAL)

5) It costs 33% or less of actual smokes (once you absorb the cost of the device itself)
Yep... and that's taking Polish cigarette prices (USD 3.30 per pack of 20). I can go for 3-4 days on a bottle of 10ml liquid! If that isn't a good deal, I don't know what is! And this is at my current rate of vaping which is quite intense (especially with Hazelnut, man...)

6) You feel great in the morning
YES!! No more feeling like a regurgitated hunk of crap! I feel fantastic now, and not to mention that my skin looks better, my hands don’t stink, my clothes are fresh, and I got my sense of smell back. Has its drawbacks though, you also smell less pleasant odors better, but hey, win some lose some!

7) You still get to do your silly hand-to-mouth habit/addiction
And that's for me probably the things that does it - the main thing that kept me coming back to ciggies. This is no longer a problem with e-smokes. Temptation resisted!

8) You still get the nicotine shot
Yep... so that addiction can still be fed. I am going to switch to nicotine-free liquids in a week or two - I first want to be convinced without a doubt I can leave real cigs behind. Then moving on to no nicotine. I am already on one of the weakest versions (11mg - they go up to 24mg) so this ought not to be a major issue

9) You do not need an ashtray
Well, clearly! No more worrying about where to leave that cigarette ...., whether it is OK to just flick it onto the street, no more mini-guilt trip for messing someone's balcony/garden/house/car/etc. And - it improves your green credentials! :)

10) It does not keep smoking while you don’t actually use it
It only makes smoke when you suck on it - so when it is just lying there it makes no smoke what so ever, no stench, no waste.

11) You do not need to carry a lighter
Although a spare battery and extra liquid can be useful when you go out for extended periods

12) You don’t stink
And yeah... life starts to smell nice! I can lift my kid now without constantly feeling like I am harming her health in some way, even though I already used to brush teeth/wash hands very frequently.

WITH A LIST OF SERIOUS, IMMEDIATE AND CLEAR ADVANTAGES LIKE THIS, WHO CAN IN THEIR RIGHT MIND CONTINUE SMOKING ANALOGUE CIGARETTES??

Perhaps this is not for you, perhaps you just like real cigarettes. Sure – I suppose it’s possible. But there is NO reason why you shouldn’t try e-smokes. NONE. What… you will spend that money on killing yourself slowly anyway, might as well fork out those 50 bucks and get yourself a kit, and give it a good go. And when I say “a good go” – no, this is NOT the same as taking a puff from a mate who owns one, and say “meh it’s not for me!” Don’t be a fool, DON’T FEAR CHANGE. This is the solution, and it will save your life. Do it! Try it! Get better! I have been smoking for 15 years, and for the larger part of that time, I liked smokes. I enjoyed them, they were a part of me. I could not imagine situations without smoking, for me, it was an integral part of my identity, I know how it feels man, I have been there. These things are the solution, and they work. DO IT NOW!

DISCLAIMER: I have no shares, business interest, financial investment or any kind of affiliation with manufacturers of any products related to e-cigarettes. I am a software developer. I am just a guy like you that got sick of feeling like crap, of feeling weak, unable to drop this self-inflicted death habit. I won! And you can too! There is no easier way. Unless you prefer dying instead. Good luck! W.

Great blog!

I don't mean to rain on the parade but I do have bones to pick with 4,5, & 6.

4) You can "smoke" in the house. And in the shops, and on the plane, and… anywhere!
You can not smoke on planes. Just about every single airline has banned the use of ecigs.

5) It costs 33% or less of actual smokes (once you absorb the cost of the device itself)
It can cost 33% less once you have established what devices you like, what juices you like, cartos, tanks, etc. etc. but I think anyone that starts vaping for the reason of saving money will be greatly disappointed.

6) You feel great in the morning
My first 3 months in I felt far worse in the mornings because that when my nic cravings were the strongest. I remember my lungs would always be super constricted in the mornings and it was hard for me to breath. This was not from the vaping because this is how I would feel when I was a smoker and hadn't had a smoke in several hours. I do feel better overall now, 2 years later, than I did when I was smoking but the change, for me, was gradual. I never woke up one day and thought "Wow! I feel great!" Placebo may play a role here but that is my assertion based my own experience and yours is probably different but overall, I think this is hyped up too much, too often.

I just think we should try to be as honest as possible to people about what to expect and give them a realistic view of what they are really in for. If you promise more than is realistic, then you may just turn a vaping noobie back to smoking.

Sorry for the nitpicking. Overall, great blog and it's wonderful to see people like you spreading the fever! :D

My friend, your post has helped me out more than you will ever know.

I was so convinced that you can either smoke or vape but not both, which is a deadly combination for analog relapse.
Now, thanks to you, I've figured out that one should simply vape and smoke the occasional regular cigarette, until phasing them out completely.

The advantages of the eCig are ENORMOUS.

I agree with the saving money part. Analogs are 6.50+ a pack here, and I've spent
about $120 total on my ecigs so far. I've saved TONS. You don't have to spend a ton
of money on ecigs, that's just a new addiction, buying more and more gadgets for your
set-up. I haven't done that yet.

How about this for another advantage: Don't have to leave the house in horrid weather
because you are on your last analog, and need to buy more - blizzards and torrential downpours
never seemed to stop me in the past.

And, the same applies to smoking itself, freezing on a sidewalk, or forgetting the umbrella and
getting soaked just to have that cig.

Yeah, been there, done that, all over it now. :vapor:

Congratulations on your quit! And welcome to vaping :)
You might also want to encourage your friends to come here and read/research for themselves. Something to read about: the ejuice nicotine strength vs nicotine in a pack of smokes. One pack a day smoker may be able to quit easily on 6-12 mg and then there are people like me who needed double that to be successful. So keep in mind if a friend tries vaping and it's not working for them, they made need to up their nic dose to be successful and stay off smokes.
Happy Vaping!
