Congrats! Nah, definately not smoking. Maybe in the sense that you inhale and exhale something, but not even close to smoking tobacco.

Just tell them it's like the patch, or more similar, a nicotine inhaler. The difference being your e-cig heats up the nicotine so you can satisfy the psychological addiction of inhaling and exhaling, hand to mouth, etc. It just mimics smoking, but you wouldn't say you're a smoker if you were on the patch!! You are officially a non-smoker now!

There is the whole demonization of nicotine now, which really shocked me when I learned about it. If you get any BS from anyone about continuing to use nicotine and you haven't "really quit", you can always say 'well the best part about e-cigs is that I can slowly taper down to 0 nic at my own pace"...which is true. Or if you're feeling confrontational, tell 'em to stick their opinion up their...er...to mind their own business! This is about US doing what we need to do to live healthier and longer lives. No ones negative opinion really matters at the end of the day. Let the health nuts ride their bikes in the middle of a busy street, because THAT is SAFE! haha (no offense my spandex-wearing homies)

When caffeine and energy drinks are banned, then we can talk about how terrible nicotine by itself is. Under 18 can buy redbull? Yeah that's healthy, but nicotine is the devil.

One more thing. You obviously wouldn't DIE if you quit nicotine completely, but I think anyone who has smoked for 20+ years should just stay on it. I say this because of the way nicotine and other drugs affect the brain. There is a chance that dopamine levels in our brain will never be as high as it should be without nicotine. I'm not 100% sure if the damage is permanent or reversable, but it's another example of how ignorant the anti-nicotine folks are. They know nothing about addiction. Check this out.

Low dopamine levels after quitting causing relapse

Makes sense to me. It takes less than a month to get the nicotine out of a heavy smokers body, yet what's the first thing a smoker getting out of jail does? It's obviously not the hand-to-mouth aspect that makes them desperately crave a cigarette after months or years of no nic. I think there must be long-term permanent changes in the brain. Point being, it's not WRONG for us to continue our nicotine addiction. It is what it is, and the ignorant among us can either accept our healthier choices, or go play in traffic. Sometimes it's hard to not get support from those closest to us, but we gotta do what we gotta do. We understand and support you!

Some of this is slightly off-topic, but I hope it helps. "Take what you need and leave the rest" :)

100% no. Smoking and vaping is like... bacon and turkey bacon. They might look and feel similar, MAYBE even taste a bit similar, but in the end they aren't the same thing at all.

Lol @ bad analogies.

i liked it :) but...if bacon were smoking and turkey bacon were vaping....i'd like turkey bacon better (after 30 years of thinking i loved bacon. who knew?!)...without the analogy...i <3 bacon LOL

I had a coworker tell me the other day that I didn't "really" quit smoking because I was using an e-cigarette instead. So I asked her if she walked to work instead of driving her car would she still say that she drove to work? She said no of course. I asked her why and she said because walking and driving are different. To which I responded, I am vaping not smoking. Yes they are different... sorry but I quit smoking and I am proud of it... go rain on a different parade.

You are definitely not smoking and don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise!

Congrats on making it 3 weeks! Keep vaping on!
i had a girl that sits next to me who is young and makes super quick uninformed judgments look down her nose and say
"that is so much worse for you than smoking...my bf tried it and it didn't even work" (he tried the disposable thingers)
i just said "you are so funny...you get all judgey without getting all the information :D" and went out and vaped :D

I have had similar reactions from family/friends since I switched to vaping 2 months ago. Obviously, technically, it is NOT smoking. There is no combustion/fire/ash, etc. BUT I do find it sort of a 'gray area' in terms of answering the question "Have I quit smoking?" Technically, YES I have, but I haven't quit my habit of inhaling nicotine into my lungs throughout the day. Only by technicality have we quit smoking, whereas my habit of the 'smoking ritual' hasn't really changed much. The reason it was so easy to switch to vaping, as opposed to quitting with the patch, etc - is that in essence we are allowed to continue our habit under almost identical conditions that our smoking habit existed within. The way I phrase it to people in my life, is 'it allows me to continue my smoking habit while vastly reducing the health risks."

Of course, again, the straight answer is "No, vaping is not smoking" - but there are so many similarities between the 2 methods of nicotine delivery that I see why a gray area exists.
i vape WAY more than i ever smoked....cuz i can? i might need to reevaluate that but i do consider myself a non-smoker as i would think anyone that didn't actually see me vaping would....

Sounds like she basically made your point for you...

    Heh, yeah.

So I'd want to ask if using nicotine gum is "smoking". Or using nicotine patches? Somebody around here (I believe that's where I saw this) has a sig commenting that if what we're using are "electronic cigarettes" then chewing tobacco must be "chewable cigarettes" or to that effect. Made me laugh but there's a point there. I mean, if I switched to chewing tobacco instead of vaping, would people say I was still smoking? And wouldn't I laugh at them?

Ya know, I think from now on I shall call nicotine gum "chewable cigarettes".

    What's good for the goose...

    Yeah, seriously.

I remember when the first ban on smoking in bars took place. I actually just cracked up laughing. Because, as we all know, alcohol is a health food and getting drunk improves ones health ever so much.

    <eye roll>

We are so often so hypocritical in this country. My drug of choice is okay, yours should be illegal and WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!

Vaping is NOT smoking. To confirm this here are some examples.

My husband and I have the same doctor. When we started with him a few years ago we both smoked. I started vaping in 2011 and hubby started (full time) in 2012. Now our doctor has noted "non smoker" on both of our charts. He knows we use "e-cigs".

Husband had to take a substance abuse course as part of being put on an organ transplant list. The counselor asked him if he smoked and he told him "No. I use an e-cigarette". The counselor (certified with the state and with Mayo Clinic) noted down "Non Smoker" on my husbands paperwork.

I had to see a heart surgeon about some issues I was having in 2011. Had to have a stress test etc. due to an abnormal EKG reading. The doctor asked me if I smoked, and I told him I didn't, but that I did use "e-cigs". He nodded and said he'd heard many stories of people quitting smoking by vaping. He noted I was a "non smoker" on my chart.

My husband...in the process of the organ transplant thing has to go to Mayo Clinic regularly. He is considered a non smoker there, although they do know he vapes.

Hubby in the another hospital for some tests and was vaping in a hallway (out of the way of other people) when he was approached by a security guard. He was wearing a tee shirt that said "It's Just Vapor". The guard looked at what hubby was puffing on and the shirt and smiled and said "I wish more of you e-cig people would wear those shirts! Would save me a lot of trouble running around every time someone complains about someone smoking!" He then turned and walked away, leaving hubby still puffing.

So while the "official medical community" won't come out and say it...the individual doctors and hospitals we deal with are on board with the concept. It's just the medical bureaucratic BS that prevents them from "coming out" in support or recommending vaping to their patients. Malpractice insurance being what it is. Yes...some old-timers, or not so good doctors still have misconceptions. But our experience is that the really GOOD doctors who've kept up with things know the truth.

    Vaping is NOT smoking.
