Congrats! Nah, definately not smoking. Maybe in the sense that you inhale and exhale something, but not even close to smoking tobacco.
Just tell them it's like the patch, or more similar, a nicotine inhaler. The difference being your e-cig heats up the nicotine so you can satisfy the psychological addiction of inhaling and exhaling, hand to mouth, etc. It just mimics smoking, but you wouldn't say you're a smoker if you were on the patch!! You are officially a non-smoker now!
There is the whole demonization of nicotine now, which really shocked me when I learned about it. If you get any BS from anyone about continuing to use nicotine and you haven't "really quit", you can always say 'well the best part about e-cigs is that I can slowly taper down to 0 nic at my own pace"...which is true. Or if you're feeling confrontational, tell 'em to stick their opinion up their...er...to mind their own business! This is about US doing what we need to do to live healthier and longer lives. No ones negative opinion really matters at the end of the day. Let the health nuts ride their bikes in the middle of a busy street, because THAT is SAFE! haha (no offense my spandex-wearing homies)
When caffeine and energy drinks are banned, then we can talk about how terrible nicotine by itself is. Under 18 can buy redbull? Yeah that's healthy, but nicotine is the devil.
One more thing. You obviously wouldn't DIE if you quit nicotine completely, but I think anyone who has smoked for 20+ years should just stay on it. I say this because of the way nicotine and other drugs affect the brain. There is a chance that dopamine levels in our brain will never be as high as it should be without nicotine. I'm not 100% sure if the damage is permanent or reversable, but it's another example of how ignorant the anti-nicotine folks are. They know nothing about addiction. Check this out.
Low dopamine levels after quitting causing relapse
Makes sense to me. It takes less than a month to get the nicotine out of a heavy smokers body, yet what's the first thing a smoker getting out of jail does? It's obviously not the hand-to-mouth aspect that makes them desperately crave a cigarette after months or years of no nic. I think there must be long-term permanent changes in the brain. Point being, it's not WRONG for us to continue our nicotine addiction. It is what it is, and the ignorant among us can either accept our healthier choices, or go play in traffic. Sometimes it's hard to not get support from those closest to us, but we gotta do what we gotta do. We understand and support you!
Some of this is slightly off-topic, but I hope it helps. "Take what you need and leave the rest"
