I think that taking the time to talk to management before taking up vaping might have been a better first step. Sometimes stuff like this goes past management. It probably would have worked out that they would have given you equal time off instead - bit longer lunch or the same breaks to walk around without making those smoking mad at you - some could just take breaks to smoke at different times and not leave you alone. If you feel left out and not quite part of the social aspect of the smokers and gossipy smoking breaks or whatever - vaping to 'look like them and fit in' is a bit scary. And stop and think - even without nicotine you are subjected to second hand smoked during those breaks that almost as bad as if you took up smoking to join them. Don''t buy that you are unaffected by that second hand smoke just because you are outside. Better to just take and extra 15 minutes to take a stroll on the other side of the building then getting an e-cig to look like theirs (and fit in) and expose yourself to their very unhealthy activity.
I have heard many reasons (excuses) why someone took up vaping and the rationale behind 'just using 0 nic'. Problem is that the addiction, whether you know it or not is more then just to nicotine and its not hard to go from being free of so addiction to being addicted - maybe not to nicotine but to the vaping. Sure lets build up the vaping community but not by having people not addicted and needing an alternative to start. That starts happening and suddenly someone is going to say "hey they are getting people to start by using 0 nic vaping!"
One big excuse I hear is "my significant other vapes and I love the social group he/she is in". I sincerely doubt that any vape group would chase a non vaper out of a group who accompanied someone who did, so I have to ask why not participate in the social part and leaving the vaping to those that have to. How about the excuse 'its like a hobby for them' -yep it can be and its the alluring part of that that helps people looking for an alternative bridge that gap from analogs to vaping when they have more than just a nicotine addiction.
I have seen so many examples of people proud of being a 0 nic vaper not because they worked down to 0 nic, but because they joined the community by taking up vaping thinking 0 nic is 'safe'. To be honest, we know vaping is better then smoking from the point of being a smoker and wanting to be healthier but if you were not inhaling any substance - why start. Its not just water and nicotine - and we don't have all the info in yet as vaping is pretty young.
Its certain to a very close percentage that if you are smoking analogs moving too vaping is a great alternative and very good for you from the SMOKER's perspective. From the non smoker's perspective it very well might not be. Inhaling anything has its risks, its one of the most rapid ways to get things into the bloodstream and we know many, many chemicals are not filtered out by the lungs unless the particles are very large. So when a non- smoker starts vaping they have gone from 0 risk to some risk and we don't know for sure for a non smoker how big your risk could be,
Then we have the nicotine issue. Nicotine can be so very addicting to people depending on body chemistry and other things. I have seen that significant other proud of being a 0 nic vaper to join their partner social go from being a nonsmoker to a type of smoker suddenly run ut of 0 nic juice at one of those 'social' situations they wanted to be so badly part of. What happens if you run out of juice at a vape meet?
Yeah you get some from someone else. Most likely few if any have 0 nic with them and someone, usually significant other or a no thinking at the time person will share. I actually watched this happen and even though the person blew it away as 'just this once and its only 6 mg nicotine' they ended up slowly going from 0 mg nic to 12 mg. It became easier and easier to 'share' and just as easy to buy some with a bit of nic in it for those times it help, etc etc. Its very easy to get addicted to nicotine with a couple of not very good excuses.
There is also a great deal of research on how addicting second hand smoke is in and of itself. Many of us smoke because parents or those around up growing up did and we know now its not all because of 'example'. We were all addicted to the other things in analogs that we now know are there. By taking up vaping to fit in with a group -which is what you are doing has now put you in the way of this addicting and bad for your health second hand smoke. ANd when you vape in the midst of second hand smoke - instead of just inhaling some you are vaping it too - and giving second hand smoke a really easier ride into your lungs, and deeper in, then just normal breathing.
I a not being a hypocrite to say 'don't do it' when I do vape, and like vaping - heck I love vaping and I love it because its given me everything I need to break a habit and addiction in 48 hours that I never could in 40 years.
Do yourself a very big favor and give your vaping rig to one of those smokers and see if it will lure them away from the analogs and talk to your manager about a fairer break schedule where you are not left alone to do everyone's work, where all non smokers can have a social break over their mandated breaks since smokers get extra. Hopefully you where you can walk away from vaping and return to a non-smoking status. There are also other hobbies and social groups to get involved in other then vaping.
I think most of us were part of establishing a vaping community that, as with anything because social, because its part of keeping us vaping and not returning to smoking, such in a big part if the fun with the new toys out there and all things vape related. That sort of support and community involvement is what is the other part of the analog addiction - the support you need to break it. I am sure most would tell you that they would rather not have the community if it meant they did not have an addiction tied to a habit tied to a lifestyle.
