Kinda of a rant, however I'm tired of sifting through the threads dedicated to clones.

I mean it's totally valid when it comes up within a thread dedicated to the authentic, but it's gotten kinda out of hand.

If you buy or support clones, that's personal choice, and whatever keeps you off the cigs... It would be nice to see a subforum to tuck that all into though. Probably cut down on the drama as well.

Just sayin:2c:

There will always be inspiration regardless of who or where something is manufactured.

I'm not suggesting a "made in China" subforum; then everything would have to be broken down by origin of manufacture

I'm talking Chimbus, DUD, Chemesis, ect. Anything that is a direct 1:1 counterfeit or specifically sold as a clone of another device.

Sorry... but you've prompted me to editorialize just a bit. Read all at your own peril... or just jump to the last sentence. :)

Outright, 1:1 forgeries are a criminal act, IMO. Although, after speaking with several original manufacturers, some are of the opinion that when someone buys a forgery, the become familiar and like the design enough to want the real thing. Kind of a trial run before the big purchase. I get this perception, but I think it might be very limited in it's scope.

The surprisingly new attitudes about 1:1 forgeries by the Chinese that has occurred in, what seems to be only the last few months, is disappointing.
I've always thought that with China's rich artistic and design history, they could make some really interesting, classic and well developed devices of their own that would be good competition for the best and the brightest mod makers.
The Chinese however, and on the other hand are (although there are a few occasional exceptions), like most... in it for the fast buck. Money driven goals, not artistic or of honorable merit.

In my mind, I've developed my own levels of product theft.

  • The first being a "facsimile"... a device similar, but not identical, with no stolen logos or proprietary shapes. These devices I have no issues with, and will occasionally buy.
  • The second is a "clone"... a device very similar to, but not 1:1 of a genuine device. I tend to avoid these, but not at all costs.
  • Third is forgery or counterfeit. Obviously... a stolen from whole cloth, 1:1 device... represented by the current crop of Nemesis, Chi you, Ba gua, Poldiac, Kraken, SvoeMesto Kayfun... et al. No different than a Chinese Mercedes or Maserati. I will not support theft.
The above is neither here nor there regarding your comments, so... A China mod or China mech sub-forum would be nice, or inversely... leave it as is, and a "genuine only" sub-forum.

I didn't really post to debate the legal or moral issues. I have my own point of view and I must admit I pulled a punch or two in the OP out of respect (warranted or not). We are all vapers after all.

I was just wondering if I was on tilt or if the idea would be a good way to clean up the APV section.

In this case I feel like segregation might benefit both sides.

Agreed. However, China has been putting out some unique and original styles of mech mods. Do we post about them on the suggested clones sub forum? How about the "original" mods that are highly inspired by other original mods?
Mmmm... I think that certain mechs, the Youde V10 for example, is both reasonably original and of high quality... and regardless of it's origin, would fall into the same category (or sub-forum) as any other original design.

Truth be told... they are all just tubes with end caps and buttons. You can only be "so" original.

I like that clones exist, and i think people should have the right to buy something at a reasonable price. If the clones were actually equal in quality, I would buy them over the real ones. I just personally don't think they are of the same quality, Specifically the lock rings are an issue in every clone i've ever used or owned.

3 months ago, when I wasn't making much money, i would never have bought a real mod. Now I never buy anything but real mods.
