So I've noticed that pretty much every batch I've made has a very strong starchy kinda pasta taste
is that from the pg or the vg? I use 50/50. but I also have a bottle of each and I tried to make some with one or the other and now I don't remember what was what and what I used with the oils or not...

I'm still trying to figure all of this out and i've tried to use some of the calculators and still my mixes are coming out odd tasting
either perfumey which I'm fairly sure is from the clove oil
so I tried some other flavors and every time it's got this starch taste....

I don't mind either way about th [edit: or vapor cloud] I just want something good to vape prefer to work on my clove but atm i'm getting annoyed over the perfume cuz clove flavoring just isn't the same so have to supplement with some clove oil.... but that's another rant in and of itself and I'll perfect that one later lol but right now the starch flavoring is keeping me from really being able to make anything truly vapable
(yes I broke down today 2 weeks analog free and bought a pack of cloves...partly due to this and that I just got my vivi nova in the mail finally and it's busted )

so last night I put a few drops of water into the mix and that seems to have helped with the starch taste but it also killed the flavor to pretty much 0 and there's no vape on the exhale...:glare:

lol *whines* someone hold my hand and help me...I don't wanna be some master mixer but I'd like to really be able to do it myself but being a noob i'm failing and failing badly which is funny cuz I'm a fairly good cook lol guess I can't use my crazy cooking skills of if it smells just right it's good ;) never been one for following directions in the kitchen

[edit 06/29/13: so basically the starch taste was due to much fillers (pg/vg) and not enough flavor using....after following the basics of a pre made recipe to make my own recipe it has come out now no starch flavor...not a tasty vapor but not starchy either so yep under flavoring and over filler = starch taste]

Have you tried your juice in a different tank or clearo? One of my iClear 30's has a weird metallic pasta taste and I don't know why...the juice tastes fine in an iClear 16 or any CE 4/5 or Smoktech dual coil tanks. Also, how long are you letting the juice steep before vaping it? Sometimes when I buy juice it has a funky tasted until I let it sit for a week. I haven't yet gotten into DIY juice, but looking forward to it. :) Good luck!

i have a handful of cartomizers for my Blu and everyone of them i've filled same thing
And I ordered a evod atomizer with the vivi nova to see which I'd prefer...even in the evod same funky taste, actually it's stronger in the evod then in the cartomizers...probably due to the fillers filtering out some of the taste.
I've had the flavorings for probably 2 months now and the juice i've made has been an on going tweak of this and that trying to make them vapable for a month....had hoped it was just the cartomizers and residual flavors...
cleaned 3 cartomizers shortly before the evod was delivered and alas the flavor still was there and then in the evod it became even stronger so I'm assuming it's the pg or vg and then again maybe i'm using too much pg/vg I dunno should I be watering the mixes down? From recipes i've seen it's pretty much just add flavoring, pg/vg and nic a few people use vodka (not sure why) is there something i'm overlooking?

i'm using a variety of flavors I got from diyflavorshack it's not just the clove flavor that I have this issue with...which makes me believe it's down to the pg or vg that gives the starchy taste....
hm no hadn't thought to just try vaping straight pg or vg lol....

flavor % varies...i've tried 10 - 30% although i'm still getting the hang of the calculator thingy lol....

I want flavor and nic fit fix :) although i'll admit that in the past 2 weeks of pure vaping even with my not so great mixes lol my nic fits have dropped but then again i'm not sure what levels i'm getting in my mixes lol using 68mg but no ill side effects yet so at least on that part it's all good :) now just to get the taste part in order

Yeal, unfortunately diy generally needs to be pretty exact. Write everything down and be exact with your measurements as there's nothing more frustrating than coming up with a good mix and then not remembering what went into it. (Been there, done that lol.)

Also, clove seems to be a hard flavor to tackle, even from the vendors. It's usually a bad coil gunker also.

Do you have any other flavors that you enjoy? Maybe some of us could get you going on them while you work on the clove.

Anyways, welcome to diy and happy vaping. :vapor:

apple cider vinegar? why's that? someone else suggested a drop of lemon juice to help preserve flavor.

as far as smoking went I was only a clove smoker....but I don't mind trying things with vaping. When I got my blu kit it had the java jolt and I'll admit that was nice....

as for vaping goes hey anything goes  but I would really like to get a clove vape as I've always loved clove even as a kid I loved the gum (can't remember the name) that was clove flavored and when they banned cloves in the us my mom (who's always opposed of me smoking) got me some amish clove candy  so for me i'm really just addicted to the cloves lmfao smoking/vaping was just the means to my clove addiction

why is clove flavored things so difficult to find lol can't keep driving to amish country all the time to get my fix....

but anyways back to my main issue of trying to vape other flavors is the yucky starch taste....

guess i'll just clean out some more cartomizers and just drop some straight pg in one and vg in the other and see which one is giving the taste....
figured i'd stick with 50/50 as i wasn't sure about some people say one way or the other they prefer the flavor and or it hurts their throats...figured half and half was a safe bet

and from now on time to start sticking to the calculator and strict recipe directions lol

Water and or pga (pure grain alcohol) is generally added if you need to thin a high VG mix. If your doing something along the lines of 70% pg in a mix then you don't need to worry about that. What level of nicotine are you shooting for? A high level can really cut back on how much real flavor you can taste sometimes.

I looked up potential flavor components of clove cigs by the way. The cigs break down to about 60 to 80% regular tobacco to 20 to 40% cloves. But like many cigarettes they also have flavorings added. Those flavors may include: cardamom, cinnamon, cocoa, licorice, caramel, fruit flavor and a sweetener. So when your working on your clove flavor you may want to add a bit of a tobacco (maybe the ry4 from the flavor apprentice or something similar), some sweetener and so forth. Those would be in very small percents to add the depth you are expecting from a clove flavor.

thanks SouthernBliss yeah I'd been using clove flavoring and a drop or two of clove oil to give it that real flavor/tingly/crackle and anise which was pretty decent (of course I didn't keep track of what I had did lol so haven't been able to repeat it) was thinking of hint of cinnamon hadn't thought about cardamom or cocoa.

was shooting for around 24mg but really I don't mind what level the nic is as long as the flavor is good I don't mind vaping more to get the nic fix
really plan on different levels for those days when I really need some nicotine and then little for other days when vaping just for sheer joy of vaping

Okay I recently tackled the exact issue you are having I was using 50/50 with 12mg nic. And the scratchyness made it totally unvapeable. I switched to 70/30 vg/pg and cut my nic in half to 6mg and its smooth as a babies bottom. Maybe too smooth I might up the nic back up a tad. But try this and see if it fixes your issue.

I did a bit more research and didn't find any recent recipes for clove but I did find some information from a couple of years ago. It looks like back then they were using 4 drops clove oil and 1 drop anise for a 10 mil batch. It is possible your over flavoring. Would not have thought it possible with oils to flavor to the point of no flavor though. I also read that it was the clove that was really hard on peoples throats and that the anise helped smooth it out some. My suggestion at this point would be to try the drops for flavor and then add in a couple of drops of sweetener or EM. I did find one that said percentages 2.5% clove and 2.3% Anise both oils again.

ok so I made a new batch today following a recipe (more or less :D) and it is not starchy so yes I think I was under flavoring and was vaping mostly the pg/vg....eh still isn't tasty lol but it's at least not starch flavored now :D so long story short the starch flavor was due to too much fillers and not enough flavors per ml

and also thanks a bunch for all the other help given the clove a rest for a bit and am working on a banana chocolate pudding :D smells great and is making me hungry...
think it's time to get some new cartomizers...even after cleaning still residual flavor left....
