Your topic title is a little misleading. There is no need or must to own "expensive" mods. Functionality wise all mods work the same - making the connection to provide power to the attached atomizer.
I own a couple mods over rm500, 1 over rm1k, and a pinoy clone. Like birdieboogey said it - merely for myself gratification and also bragging rights

I know a few Msians will be buying a mod that's nearly rm10k. That mod is made out of precious metal.

You can expect the higher end mods to have better machining quality, some with better features and voltage drops than a cheaper or clone mod.

For example, the chi you original positive contact was not accurately or poorly replicated on the clone. Sigelei's Nzonic clone I think is BS. And to me China's Caravela clone is a just #$%#! joke.

To be fair, there are examples too where the clone improves over the original.

If you can be content with what you have, then it's all good.

Talking about clones, there is a disturbing trend lately, which is in particular things like Chi You, Nimbus, etc counterfeits, complete with serial numbers. While clones are subjectively ok (my opinion anyway), counterfeits (which are EXACT copies) in my opinion is harmful to the community.

If this goes out of control, soon you will see less and less people wanting to spend time and money into innovating new products. I'm sure a lot of money goes into making and enhancing countless prototypes before the actual production model is created.

Thoughts?

As for most people "hand making" their mods. If it's a hobby, keep it up, but stick to your day job for your income. I'm all for it going out of control and seeing less and less people wanting to spend time on this stuff if need be. Innovation will always be there regardless of what happens. Quality will get better no matter what. Look at cars, phones, etc. Even knock offs in Mexico are better quality than they were years ago.

Just to get a better understanding could you kindly clarify which do you define as clones and counterfeits please? I see Ithaka, Nimbus, Sentinel, Chi You so-called clones flooding FB pages. Do consider those as clones or counterfeits?

How about the DS Mod, M28 or The Russian? Would call those as clones or counterfeits?

To me either would be intellectual theft. Original modders put alot of thought and spent time, money developing their product. Then along comes someone copies the original without having to spend anything on development; robbing the modder.

On the flipside, these inexpensive clones/counterfeits have a market because there are people who wouldn't be able to afford the original or cannot justify to themselves spending xxxx amount of money for a mod.

To support the original modder or clone manufacturer with your purchase - I think it's an ethics or moral question.

Very good post that I agree with.

I've seen some website (e.g. FastTech) sell item described just as Ithhaka or Sentinel without word "clone" anywhere. This is simply wrong. And I've seen some people buy this "Sentinel" without ever knowing that this is a clone of a real Mod. I consider this close to counterfeiting (albeit probably a bad counterfeiting if you put two next to each other).

The Russian ... from what I've seen online ... it actually has a slight design change from the original and is of high quality .. I think this is in more of a grey area.

I don't care what others do but I will support the original modders as much as I can ... and it seems like they are doing OK since many designs are sold out rather quickly. I'm trying to get GP Paps either from the modder or in the secondary market with no success. I hope many will still continue to pump out new designs.

Maybe soon, we'll start the see some high end new mods coming out of China!!!
